Sara Gilbert on returning to acting and wedding plans

The last few years have been great for Sara Gilbert. As the creator and co-host of The Talk she has a hit daytime TV show, she recently got engaged to Linda Perry (with an incredibly romantic proposal, in fact) and now she’s returning to acting on the television adaptation of Bad Teacher, coming to CBS mid-season.

“She’s really awkward, a kind of nerdy teacher,” Sara said of her new role as Irene. “Guileless. I think you kind of love her because she’s so innocent. Even though she’s in her 30s she probably seems like she’s in her early 20s, like really clueless. I think she’s not social, I think she kind of grew up a nerd, just had never really fit in and went into teaching. She just has a limited range of experiences. And there’s just something innocent about her spirit, you know?”

Sara, who we spoke with at the TCA CBS party this week, said she was attracted to the project because of writer Hilary Winston (Happy Endings, Community), as well as the other actors attached, including star Ari Graynor. Irene will be a regular part of Bad Teacher, but it remains to be seen if she’ll be able to do as much as she wants while also continuing her daily duties on The Talk.

“It was supposed to be every episode but because I’m doing The Talk so I might not do all of them because I’m trying to balance both schedules,” Sara said. “We don’t start until September so I’ll let you know.”

Next month Sara’s book about green living, The Imperfect Environmentalist, comes out and she seems pretty thrilled about getting into publishing. “I’m really excited. It’s a new world for me so it’ll be interesting,” she said. “I’m going to do some press in New York. It comes out August 13 and so then I do the press right around then.”

Because she’s so busy, she doesn’t have a wedding date yet. “I gotta focus on that,” she said with a laugh. “Yeah, I think-I don’t want to bore you with all that stuff. I’ll let you know when it’s all solid.”

She does admit she has an “idea of what she wants” for the outfit she’ll wear down the aisle, but otherwise she’s keeping quiet. She’s got a lot of other things on her mind.

The Talk airs daily on CBS.
