Ruby Rose: The Hot 100 Interview

Ruby Rose was the winner of our 2015 Hot 100 (reasons clear!) and even though she’s on set in Cape Town, South Africa shooting Resident Evil 6: The Final Chapter, she agreed to answer questions from AfterEllen Hot 100 voters and fans. So here are’s what you wanted to know about the out model/DJ/actress.

Do you have any secret talents?

Ruby Rose: I’m fairly convinced I can speak to animals.

Are there any projects you are currently working on that you are allowed to tell us about?

RR: I am currently in the beautiful Cape Town, South Africa, my first time here shooting RE6.

Who made the biggest influence on you during your whole life and helped you become who you are?

RR: I guess my mother, she had me very young and it was her and I against the world. I’ve had so many positive and negative influences in my life and I think I have taken as much from both. Both motivate me in different ways and both helped create who I am today.

What’s a song that means a lot to you?

RR: Sinead O’Conner nothing compares to you. My mum and I used to sing it to each other when I was a kid, along with “What’s Going On” by Linda Perry. Sia‘s “Breathe me” was a powerful song during tough times and is tattooed on my neck.

What’s your biggest or strangest fear?

RR: Not making a mark, not using my time wisely. But every day, I combat that fear and make sure I am being the best person I can be.

If you could, what would you tell your 13-year-old self?

RR: That it gets better, that no one should be given the power to make me feel less than; that I am good enough.

What do you do in your free time?

RR:I spend every waking hour I’m not working, with my family, my partner and my dogs and that cat that moved in one day and never left. If I’m traveling, then I read or watch old Hollywood films.

If I came into your home and looked inside the refrigerator, what would I find?

RR: Probably a lot of juices that have been in there so long they are either wine, or toxic. or I suppose that’s the same thing. I don’t know, I haven’t seen my fridge for months.

What’s the one thing you miss most from Australia?

RR: The food. Well, no, my friends and family, obviously, then the food. And my other dog. Shout out to the OG, Daisy!

When should fans expect another single or an album from you?

RR: Gosh, I don’t know. Right now let me get this film happening and the other secret unannounced projects and then let me see what I can do for you 🙂

Is it hard at times to find the right balance between your life in the spotlight and your private life?

RR: I have a very understanding partner. Partner is such a strange word isn’t it. I say Mrs., but in print it sounds sort of bogan like (Aussie term) or chauvinistic. Its a term of endearment I swear. But anyway I don’t know, I just make balance, I work hard on making life outside of work a priority.

How has your life changed because of OITNB?

RR:I mean, words couldn’t possibly describe it.

What’s the biggest misconception people have about you?

RR: I don’t know, I’d have to ask the people! Whatever it is, if it isn’t true, it shouldn’t bother me. Like they say, people’s opinions of me is none of my business. People either love me or hate me and that’s okay. I know I have a huge heart, I love deeply, I’m grateful for everything I have in this world and all the things I don’t, and I love what I do. I’m authentically me and that’s all I can be.

Where do you see yourself in another ten years? What would you like to be doing or have accomplished?

RR: I wouldn’t dare try to guess where I will be next month. The world is a crazy, joyous ride and I’m just a passenger. Id like to have made a difference to people. I’d like to have made an impact on someone who needed it.
