Morning Brew: Olympic archer comes out as a lesbian, Michelle Rodriguez can’t stop talking about her “dyke stigma”

Good morning, Brewbies.

South African Olympic archer Karen Hultzer came out as a lesbian to OutSports.com after her competition yesterday. She told them:

I am an archer, middle aged and a lesbian. I am also cranky before my first cup of coffee. None of these aspects define who I am, they are simply part of me. I am fortunate that my sexual identity is not an issue, and I don’t suffer the level of discrimination and violence that black lesbians in South Africa do. I look forward to the day when this is a non-issue and as relevant as my eye color or favorite sushi.

She is only the second ever South African Olympian (and first ever Olympic archer) to open up about her sexuality.

How did the other openly gay ladies do in the third day of Olympic play? Seimone Augustus contributed 13 points and three rebounds to Team USA’s defeat of Angola. Rikke Skov of the Denmark handball team scored one goal in her team’s 25-24 loss to Korea. Also, in handball, Alexandra Lacabere‘s French team tied with Spain. German fencer Imke Duplitzer, whom a couple of readers alerted me to in yesterday’s Brew comments, won her first match against Venezuela, but was defeated in her second match against China. Australian beach volleyball player Natalie Cook (and volleyball partner Tasmin Hinchley) dropped to 0-2 in pool play against Austria.

(As always, kindly let me know if I missed anyone. I’m trying to stay up-to-date in real-time, and it’s quite a task!)

The Democratic Party is going full-on fast and furious trying to ensure that marriage equality is a part of the party’s official platform as the 2012 election season draws near. According to BuzzFeed, several sources have confirmed to them that it was a unanimous vote among the drafting committee this weekend. Now, it’ll pass through the platform committee before the delegates vote on it at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, NC at the beginning of September. Obviously, it will be a huge deal if it happens, not only because it will be a first for any national party, but also because it means Democrats think the message of equality has become popular enough to make it a tide-turning vote-getter.

Well, it happened: Ryan Murphy joined Twitter. His first tweet was to his “beloved” Lea Michele, and he followed it up with a photo of Lea and Kate Hudson on-set for some NYADA story-times.

Bets on how long he’ll last before angry Glee fans make him regret the day he was born his decision to embrace social media?

Pretty Little Liars is all new tonight with an episode I’m calling “Paigeapalooza” because it’s the beginning of Lindsey Shaw‘s run to the end of the season. What’s going to happen tonight? Well, these are the photos the cast and crew were tweeting out while it was filming. So … something awesome, I’ll bet!

Lana Wachowski — formerly Larry Wachowski — became the first big-time Hollywood director to come out as transgender when she revealed her transition yesterday. The Matrix director is currently promoting her new film, Cloud Atlas. You can watch a video of Lana discussing the film with her brother and Tom Tykwer.
