Morning Brew: “Law & Order: SVU” preps a very special gay episode, lesbian teen comes out with a cake

Good morning, Brewbies!

Worried about what Paige was getting up to in that lezzy bar on last night’s Pretty Little Liars? Let Emily put your mind at ease in a sneak peek clip from next week’s episode, “Dead to Me.”

E! Online’s annual TV’s Top Couples poll includes three lesbian couples this year: Brittana, Calzona, and Doccubus. Voting for the first round ended last night, but I’m well enough acquainted with lesbian fandom to say all three of those couples probably made it through. Voting for round two starts today.

New York Magazine has published a long-form feature on NYC City Council Speaker and potential mayoral candidate Christie Quinn, in which she opens up about a whole lot of stuff, including being gay:

[I came out] to myself probably in college in a fairly non-coming-outy way. I actually remember being in my dorm room and saying out loud, ‘You are not going to have this problem.’ And then I started working on Tom Duane’s campaign for City Council. I was in the super-duperest gay environment ever-and, look, at 25, it becomes hard to keep it tucked away. Tom and I were on the subway on the way to a rent-guidelines-board meeting, and I said to him, ‘I need to talk to you about something important.’ And he said, ‘Oh my God, you’re quitting.’ I said, ‘No.’ And he said, ‘What? You’re a lesbian?'”

“Super-duperest” sounds like the kind of descriptor Leslie Knope would use. I approve.

Yesterday, Gawker posted a photo/story of the one of the best coming outs I have ever seen in my life.

How did Laurel’s parents respond?

My dad saw the cake and came into my room and hugged me and laughed. He said he loved me and the cake and the letter and everything was perfect. My mom saw it and cried of happiness. We hugged and cried together. Then, we all ate the cake and talked.

Rock on, parents in 2013!

Law & Order: SVU has a very special gay rights episode on the way:

Glee has released a bunch of the songs from this week’s episode, including Sara Bareilles ‘s “Love Song,” as performed by the warring ships Quinntana and Faberry.

Are you a New Yorker looking for a Valentine’s Day date? The Strand is here to help. On Feb. 7th, they’re hosting a speed dating event for queer ladies who love books. Personally, I’d use it as a chance to quiz lesbians about the depth of their Harry Potter knowledge, but you could use it to talk about Plath or whatever!
