Morning Brew – Wednesday, August 24: “LIPSTIKKA” will premiere at TIFF, Rachel Maddow on “The Late Show”

Hi!

Rachel Maddow talked (what else?) politics on last night’s Late Show with David Letterman.

I can’t believe she didn’t mention meeting me. I thought that was the highlight of her year. Or maybe it was the highlight of my year, and she didn’t care…

SheWired pointed out this new web series called Breaking Point that stars Crystal Coney as a bisexual bar owner. In the first episode, Crystal deals with the aftermath of getting her heartbroken by Tory (Jillian Peterson).

Jessica Clark posted this photo of hers that’s in the new issue of German Glamour. She wrote she’s getting “political” in the pic but I’d also say she’s getting felt up.

Fox News is mad that some New Jersey students are being asked to read a book with lesbian content. It’s called Norwegian Wood and is on a reading list for sophomores in an honors English class. Fox says, “The book included a graphic depiction of a lesbian sex scene between a 31-year-old woman and a 13-year old girl.” How have I not heard of this book? And why did I not get to read anything that good in high school honors English?

Fox has a new promo for Glee/Fashion’s Night Out, and it seems to be from the set of Vogue where both Santana and Mercedes are not in attendance. Are they having a diva-off somewhere?

Over at the Huffington Post, Staceyann Chin penned a letter to her “unborn son or daughter.” She writes:

I have also begun to obsess about what I will name you. I want to give you a name that rings with compassion and concern for others. A name that tells everyone that you are from a home/mother that values radical, progressive, gender-equal politics. But I also worry about calling you something that is antithetical to your nature, or giving you some typical lesbian-feminist-in-the-woods name that gets you teased and beaten up at school. After all, there is no guarantee that I will be able to afford one of the super-expensive, diversity-focused schools where most of the affluent lesbian feminists send the sons they decided to name Hydrangea.

Just don’t name her Hymen and we’re all good.

Bloomberg has a profile of lesbian surrealist photographer Claude Cahun, whose work is being shown in Paris through Sept. 25. She’s somewhat of a cult figure, with some very haunting work.

Brandi Carlile is going on a solo tour this fall and winter! Check out BrandiCarlile.com for the complete list of dates, which kicks off Nov. 1 in Burlington, Vermont.

LIPSTIKKA is a film about two Palestinian women who move from friends to lovers, with things getting all the more complicated by a run-in with Israeli troops.

The film will make its North American debut at the Toronto International Film Festival Sept. 10.
