Afternoon Delight: Going vegan with Ellen, Alison Bechdel talks about why her new book is taking so long

Good afternoon!

Happy birthday to Academy Award winner Marlee Matlin! The L Word actress is 46 years old. Out comedian Sandra Valls is also celebrating her birth today.

As the new season of The Ellen DeGeneres Show revs up, Ellen and her lovely wife, Portia, have been spotted all around Los Angeles dining vegan style.

Going vegan might seem like an extreme diet for those of you who enjoy your animal protein but DeGeneres gives a step by step “Going Vegan with Ellen” guide on her website for folks interested in taking the flesh free leap. Who else is vegan? Bones actress Emily Deschanel, k.d. lang and Glee‘s Lea Michele.

For those of you who love Twilight‘s Kristen Stewart, check out the below black and white screen test from W magazine. (I got chills at the 2:25 mark when Stewart declared, “I f–king love me a vampire.”)

Rumors are circulating that Chaz Bono might be competing in the next season of ABC’s Dancing With the Stars. Now I’m not a DWTS fan, but if Bono signs on to shake his bon-bon then I’ll tune in every week to cheer him on.

UK’s Grazia magazine is reporting that Lady Gaga and her sister, Natali Germanotta, are teaming up to launch their own clothing line. The surprising news (besides the fact that Germanotta goes by the name “Baby Gaga”) is that the sisters’ line will be comprised of “relatively normal and wearable” clothing. The Gagas fashions are said to be inspired by Hollywood icons Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly and Katherine Hepburn. I’m pretty sure Hepburn is rolling over in her grave.

According to a new study by the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film at San Diego State University, there were fewer females in front of and behind the camera on primetime television last season. That’s depressing.

On Wednesday, September 21, the third season of Modern Family debuts on ABC. Check out the Emmy award-winning show’s family portrait, including a new and older Baby Lily.

Jane Lynch‘s memoir, Happy Accidents, is garnering a lot of press. On CNN’s Showbiz Tonight, there was an entire segment dedicated to Lynch’s book, which included some revealing information on the comedian’s past battle with alcoholism and cough medicine.

Cartoonist Alison Bechdel garnered much notoriety for her 2006 best-seller Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic, which is an absolutely outstanding memoir centered around Bechdel’s relationship with her late father. The out author is now working on a graphic memoir about her mother. (My mother would kill me if I wrote a book about her.) In the video below, Bechdel explains why her soon to be next best selling book is taking such a long time to complete.
