Morning Brew – Tuesday, Oct. 11: Joss Stone on kissing girls, Leisha Hailey talks not wanting to be a gay role model

Happy Coming Out Day! I want you to know I’m a lesbian.

Heather Peace is one, too. She wants you to know coming out is awesome.

This was the best and most fulfilling decision I’ve ever made. My music career has benefitted hugely, I love my job on Lip Service and I’m currently filming the new series of a mainstream BBC 1 TV show. But better than this, I get Tweets, emails and Facebook messages every day from gay people of all ages who tell me that seeing me live my life openly has helped them come out or helped their friends or family understand a little bit better. So, happy National Coming Out Day everyone, I recommend it.

WetPaint has compiled their favorite coming out moments on TV. Santana, Callie and Willow made the list, as well as some other women you will recognize.

Betty White says she thinks we love her (gay boys, too) for two reasons.

Throughout my career, I’ve always portrayed characters that were humorous, but also weren’t afraid to speak their minds, especially when it came to racy or controversial topics. I think this struck a chord with the LGBT community. We both also share a very strong love for animals. When you combine the two, it’s a very strong match.

I didn’t even know she cared about animals so much. Now I love her even more. (The Golden Girls lesbian episode was what did it for me!)

A girl who attended a Gossip concert and jumped on the stage with a “Dyke whore” poster claims she was a little drunk and ill-timed, but she had good intentions.

I’m not a homophobe, I’m a full-time licker! I have “GAY PRIDE” written on my back and “DYKE” on my knuckles. It was meant to challenge people — get ’em angry and passionate, and make people think. But now I feel I’ve been misrepresented.

The band’s singer Beth Ditto said to the girl, “I may be a dyke, but I’m not a whore!”

Someone who will gladly wear a “SLUT” T-shirt, though, is Lindsay Bluth. Find her on these new Arrested Development tarot cards.

Kirsten Vangsness was on The Talk yesterday, where she discussed meeting her girlfriend, Melanie, and how she knew she was the one.

Joss Stone says she identifies as straight but she’s kissed some girls in her day.

No! I’ve snogged girls before in my time. But I’m not a lesbian. I swear it, I’m not! I don’t think I could go in that direction, but I have snogged girls before when I was little. Of course I have. That’s what we do as girls.

She also says that the movie she made where she plays a lesbian isn’t likely to come out any time soon.

Where I made out with a woman? I did! (Laughs) I think the guys that put it together had some kind of crazy misunderstanding and it never got sorted. It’s mad, the movie was. It’s so funny because some of it was really serious and very professional and then there’s a lot of it that’s kind of slightly dodge, as we would say. … But the time I did it for a movie, it was kind of halfway there; it was a local thing that was happening 20 minutes from where I live, and my friend was making the movie and he said, “Joss, will you play a lesbian? It’ll only take a day.” I said, “That sounds fun!”

Said kiss happens around 1:37.

Leisha Hailey told an interviewer she’s not interested in being a gay role model.

I couldn’t take the weight of that. I can’t say, “Oh look at me, I’m the perfect example of what you all are.” I would never ever say or think something like that.

She does, however, say she’s glad to be out and that it helps her to be more creative.

Showtime is developing a drama about the subculture of LGBT drag balls that originated in the 1930s. Behind the project is Temple Grandin writer W. Merritt Johnson and Precious director Lee Daniels. I’d love to see some lesbians from that time! Please oh please!
