Morning Brew – Friday, October 14: LaLa Vasquez loves playing a lesbian, Oprah uses Ellen as an example of living your truth

It’s Friday, which means today is already awesome.

If you didn’t catch Oprah’s Life Class last night, then what are you doing with your life? Just kidding. But it’s definitely one to try and find a re-run of because it’s all about coming out with your full truth. Here’s a clip with Ellen DeGeneres’ coming out interview on The Oprah Show in 1997.

Lesbian Margaret Smith was a joke writer for Ellen up until 2007 and now she’s back to doing stand-up, although she says she doesn’t do a lot of gay jokes.

What’s funny about being a lezzie? I talk about dating guys when I was in my 20s but I think those experiences are funny. Jokes about women can get easily graphic and I’d never do that onstage. Gay or straight, the crowd may not relate and start to disconnect. But I did receive the best compliment in the women’s restroom when this lady asked me if I had a tampon. I just wanted to make out with her because I’m too old to have one!

Danish TV star Linda P recently made an honest woman out of her girlfriend. Congrats to the lovebirds!

If you watch Covert Affairs in hopes Piper Perabo does something vaugely lesbianish, here’s a bone. TVLine promises a scene where Piper has “an oddly sexy moment in which she’s brandishing… power tools.” Eh? Eh?

Emma Donoghue is publishing a new book, The Sealed Letter, which is all about divorce. The out author told The Stylist why she’s never married her longtime partner.

I have this fear that if we ever sign on the line, the next day I’d wake up and the romance would be gone. I think we would have by now if we actually needed it in day-to-day terms to get equality at a legal level, but in Canada being common law from living together for a number of years, that’s really just as good as [being married].

TV personality La La Vazquez played a lesbian in a recent production of Love, Loss and What I Wore and she told a blogger why she loved it so much.

I think that role (the lesbian) hit closest to home for me, because some of my closest friends are gay and I see what they deal with when it comes to wanting to get married. And its a cause near and dear to my heart, so I think I appreciate that monologue the most.

She’s not kidding about her lesbian friends. She’s got a few of them on her VH1 reality show, LaLa’s Full Court Life.

This story might not be true at all, but I think it’s LOL-worthy. Rihanna may be in trouble for touching the lapdancers at a strip club. My favorite quote:

At one point she thrust her head between the legs of one of the dancers.

I’m sure she tipped well.

Check out the trailer for the documentary The Right to Love: An American Family. I’ll definitely be seeing it when it comes out next year.

Find out more about the film at the production company’s website.
