Morning Brew – Wednesday, Nov. 2: A lesbian in “Death Valley,” toddlers pose as Ellen and Portia

Hi!

If you love The B-52s, you’ll want to read this interview with Kate Pierson over at The A.V. Club in which she gives background on the band’s hit songs throughout the years. Like did you know “Love Shack” was partly based on an actual shack from The Color Purple?

Out director Desiree Lim (Sugar Sweet, Floored By Love) is debuting her latest work, The House, at the Vancouver Asian Film Festival this week. Here she is talking about the spooky plot.

The Huffington Post’s Gay Voices has an interview with brother and sister musical duo The Belle Brigade where out lesbian Barbara Gruska discusses how she and her brother are both “very attracted to beautiful, smart girls, but we’ve never fought over a girl.” Barbara is engaged, and says of her fiance:

She is an incredible jazz singer. She plays in a bunch of bands in L.A. We’ve been friends and had mutual friends for almost 10 years. She’s just the greatest person in the world.

Definitely check out The Belle Brigrade if you haven’t before. In fact, I’ll help you out by including this video.

Their self-titled album is one of my favorites from 2011.

Bisexual author Jennifer Baumgartner was interviewed by The Rumpus about her new book, F ’em!: Goo Goo, Gaga, and Some Thoughts on Balls. She discussed how another out writer, Ariel Levy, inspired her work, as Ariel penned Female Chauvinist Pigs.

Her arguments raised my hackles, but arguing with this well-researched, beautifully observed, and sharply written book allowed me to refine my own opinions and theories about women, sexuality, mores, and the power of sex.

A reader sent us this tip and I love it! Toddlewood is a photography project that poses tots as famous photos of celebrities, and check out this one of Ellen and Portia on their wedding day.

It was recently revealed that cop Carla (Tania Raymonde) of MTV’s Death Valley is gay. She brought her girlfriend to lunch on a recent episode, and her male partner (as in cop partner) was disrespectfully hitting on her.

Maybe I need to start watching this show. Cop Carla is hot! And in an interview with FearNet, Tania said we’ll see more of Carla’s personal life. (Thanks for the tip Sophie!)
