Afternoon Delight: Lucy Lawless gets busted, a Katniss Barbie doll

Good afternoon and happy Monday!

Happy birthday to former first daughter Chelsea Clinton and Brokeback Mountain actress/Rooney Mara‘s older sister, Kate Mara!

Last night bisexual actress Anna Paquin got all dolled up and watched the Oscars at Elton John‘s exclusive viewing party. (I watched the show at home in my pajamas and it was awesome!)

Xena herself, Lucy Lawless, was arrested for boarding a Shell-owned drilling ship attempting to depart from a dock in New Zealand to do some exploratory Artic drilling. Lawless and six other Greenpeace New Zealand members were charged with burglary after spending 77 hours on top of a 174-foot drilling tower on the Noble Discoverer.

During the protest, Lawless told the Associated Press, “I’ve got three kids. My sole biological reason for being on this planet is to ensure that they can flourish, and they can’t do that in a filthy, degraded environment. We need to stand up while we still can.” Don’t mess with Xena!

If you live in the United States, you might have heard of Smith College, a private school for women with the reputation of having a fair amount of lesbian students (sounds like Utopia to me.) A Smith alumni is causing controversy after sending a (in my opinion, offensive) letter to the college’s student press, The Sophian, complaining about the school’s diversity. Here is an excerpt from the letter:

The people who are attending Smith these days are A) lesbians or B) international students who get financial aid or C) low-income women of color who are the first generation in their family to go to college and will go to any school that gives them enough money. [Smith President] Carol emphasizes that this is one of her goals, and so that’s why the school needs more money for scholarships or D) white heterosexual girls who can’t get into Ivy League schools. Smith no longer looks at SATs because if it did, it would have to report them to U.S. News & World Report. Low-income black and Hispanic students generally have lower SATs than whites or Asians of any income bracket. This is an acknowledged fact because they don’t have access to expensive prep classes or private tutors. If you reduce your standards for grades and scores, you drop in the rankings, although you have accomplished a noble social objective. Smith has one of the highest diversity rates in the country. I can tell you that the days of white, wealthy, upper-class students from prep schools in cashmere coats and pearls who marry Amherst men are over. This is unfortunate because it is this demographic that puts their name on buildings, donates great art and subsidizes scholarships.

This lady gives pearls a bad name.

Christmas has come early in my world because Heather Hogan just notified me that The Hunger Games‘ Katniss will have her own Barbie doll! What’s the age cut off for playing with dolls? Pre-order your district 12 heroine, available in stores in April.

If These Walls Could Talk 2 actress Michelle Williams nabbed the Best Female Lead Indie Spirit Award for her role in My Week With Marilyn. In this photo from The Hollywood Reporter, Williams looks like Charles Dickens‘ Oliver Twist thanks to her pixie hair cut and adorable Louis Vuitton jacket and shorts. (Please Michelle, I want some more.)

Madonna has released the lyrics for “Girl Gone Wild,” her second single off her new album MDNA, out March 26. Watch the video below and sing along to the boy beat.

Spring is a coming which means it’s time to get a new hoodie! (Am I the only person that won’t leave the house unless I’m wearing a sweatshirt with a hood?) American Apparel has added all the colors of the rainbow to their new unisex zip-up hoodie collection.

This Saturday, March 2, please join me at The Liberty Art Gallery in Long Beach, CA for a night of art, stand up and a special live performance by my wife’s band, Tiger Mouth. (435 Alamitos Ave.) The party runs from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Tiger Mouth takes the stage at 7:30 p.m.

Lesbian/Bi Video of the Day!

Out actress Nicol Paone (30 RockThe Big Gay Sketch Show) participated in a special Ladies Remember Whitney Houston video along with Aisha Tyler and Casey Wilson (Happy Endings). Do you think this Funny or Die video is a little too soon? p.s. I’m in love with Casey Wilson.
