Michelle Williams lands “Mammoth” role

Earlier this week, the linster blogged about the Mad Money of Katie Holmes, and now fellow Dawson’s Creek alum Michelle Williams is getting her own headlines. Williams will star in Mammoth, the first English-language feature by Lukas Moodysson (Show Me Love, Together).

The Swedish director describes Williams as relaying “intelligence, poise and presence in every character she plays,” and I wholeheartedly agree. I’m happy to see her making news for something besides her recent split with Heath Ledger, and not only because it gives me a chance to post pictures of her looking ridiculously adorable – though that is a decided bonus.

No, the main reason I’m happy about this news is that I admire both director and star. I’ve been watching Williams’ career ever since Dick, If These Walls Could Talk 2 and Me Without You proved that she was headed for life after Capeside (I was a devoted if slightly embarrassed Creek fan, but really, not for the acting chops).

I haven’t seen either of Moodysson’s recent films, which are more experimental and have gotten less-than-stellar reviews. But he claims to be returning to a narrative style in Mammoth, which is about a New York couple, their child, and the child’s Filipina nanny. Their lives change dramatically (that never happens in movies!) when the father takes a business trip to the Philippines. Considering the general invisibility of foreign domestic workers in the U.S., I’m apprehensive: Will the film be sensitive or trite? But Moodysson does have a knack for exploring the complexity of his stars and their surroundings rather than offering pat answers. Gael GarcĂa Bernal and Marife Necesito will costar with Williams.

As far as I can tell, this will be Necesito’s first English-language picture as well. She is a television and film actor in the Philippines, but I didn’t see her in the ten-and-a-half-hour epic Evolution of a Filipino Family, which toured festivals internationally. Anyone out there familiar with her work?

Mammoth starts production early next week, so it’ll be a while before it hits theaters. Williams will appear in a few other films before then, including the The Tourist, Where the Wild Things Are, and Charlie Kaufman‘s Synecdoche, New York. I think it’s safe to say she will also continue to be ridiculously adorable.
