2008 GLAAD Awards Photos

Last Saturday night at the GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles, television shows with LGBT characters were honored, and special awards were given to Janet Jackson, Rufus Wainwright and Herb Ritts. Although a number of lesbian/bi celebrities and actors who have played lesbian/bi characters were on hand – from Ellen DeGeneres and Jennifer Beals to Michelle Paradise and Gabrielle Christian – no TV shows featuring lesbian/bi characters won.

ABC’s Brothers & Sisters took the award for Outstanding Drama Series, besting Degrassi: The Next Generation (CTV, The N), Dirty Sexy Money (ABC), Greek (ABC Family) and The L Word (Showtime), which won in 2006. ABC won again for Outstanding Comedy Series with Ugly Betty; the other nominees were Desperate Housewives (ABC), Exes & Ohs (Logo), The Sarah Silverman Program (Comedy Central) and The War at Home (Fox).

The awards were hosted by Kathy Griffin, whose reality show, My Life on the D-List (Bravo), won the award for Outstanding Reality Program. The other nominees in this category were Project Runway (Bravo), Who Wants To Be a Superhero? (Sci Fi) and Work Out (Bravo).

Earlier this month, GLAAD presented awards to Spanish-language media in South Florida, and last month, GLAAD presented awards in a variety of categories in New York. Terry Moore’s Strangers in Paradise was given the award for Outstanding Comic Book, and Kate Moira Ryan and Linda S. Chapman’s Beebo Brinker Chronicles was awarded Outstanding New York Theater — Broadway & Off—Broadway. GLAAD will honor Ilene Chaiken and Sharon Stone in San Francisco on May 10, and the GLAAD Media Awards will air on Bravo on June 27.
