Morning Brew: Thursday, May 13

Hey guys! I’m sorry to say that today is full of bad news.

First, a call to action. You may remember that I told you about 27-year-old actress/filmmaker Kiana Firouz, who participated in a new docudrama, Cul de Sac. Kiana is in danger of being deported from UK back to her home in Tehran, Iran, which she left after her documentary about the treatment of LGBT people was discovered. The problem with this is that the punishment for being a lesbian or “an adult consenting lesbian of healthy mind” is 100 whippings.

Visit the petition and help Kiana tell the UK government she should be able to stay where she is safe and to continue her groundbreaking work.

Lesbian contestant Courtney Rolston was eliminated on Masterchef Australia, despite cooking an impressive oyster dish with her team the day before.

At least we’ll have bisexual chef Holli Ugalde on the upcoming season of Hell’s Kitchen, which debuts on Fox June 1.

ESPN had a segment on E:60 about the corrective rape of lesbian athletes in South Africa. Warning: It’s disturbing, but kudos to ESPN for making this serious issue known.

Christine Woods‘ new comedy series, Perfect Couples, has been picked up by NBC. Does this mean no more lesbian Janis Hawk on FlashForward? No FlashForward at all?

OK, on to some good stuff! Out has a very tiny profile of Holly Miranda, but it has a great photo of the out singer, so I feel obliged to mention it.

The Ellen DeGeneres Show is up for eight Daytime Emmys, but not for Outstanding Talk Show or not Outstanding Talk Show Host. Ellen wrote on her website:

The Daytime Emmy nominations were announced today. I didn’t submit myself for the “Best Talk Show Host” Emmy this year. I feel my steroid use gives me an unfair advantage.

Fair enough — but what’s Dr. Phil‘s excuse?

Also up for an Emmy, Crystal Chappell for Outstanding Lead Actress as Olivia Spencer on Guiding Light.

Kristen Stewart is up twice in the Best Kiss category at the MTV Movie Awards. One, of course is with Robert Pattinson. The second:

Sia has a track, “Your Love,” on the new Eclipse soundtrack. The whole thing looks pretty damn awesome, really.
