JoJo Siwa’s New Facebook Watch Docuseries “JoJo Goes”

When JoJo Siwa isn’t Dancing with the Stars, inciting a Dance Pop Revolution, or coming out to the entire world, then she’s getting her own Facebook Watch docuseries that showcases “a behind-the-scenes look at Siwa’s daily life, spontaneous adventures, and loving relationships,” according to Pop Sugar

Yes, cynics might see JoJo Goes as just another reality television show, but that undermines the impact the star has made in normalizing gay–and being your authentic, bubbly self–to young girls. Us 90s kids had princesses, barbies, Baby Born and toys that mimic cooking and cleaning. Little girls now get JoJo: the positive, glittery tomboy who makes gay okay.

JoJo’s influence

JoJo represents what girls can be: confident, happy, creative, self-loving, original and someone who takes up space. Not what we’re expected to be: meek, mild, dutiful, accommodating, suffering, maternal, domesticated and submissive. Love her or think she’s annoying, it doesn’t really matter. Young girls deserve JoJo. We did too.

Is part of why many women are uncomfortable with JoJo’s energy and personality because she has somewhat resisted some of the dark socialisation females are subjected to? Is there a touch of envy?

The fact JoJo is gay has undeniably helped her avoid “growing up too fast” to catch the eye of men, who have certain “sexy” expectations. We’ve seen Millie Bobby Brown and Charli D’Amelio go from children to 25-year-olds overnight because of the male gaze. JoJo gives me hope that young lesbians aren’t needing to “try” being straight first and that gay and lesbian are words they’re aware of from a young age. Many of us knew we were different, even knew we weren’t into boys, but “lesbian” was in the shadows of society. We didn’t have a word.

JoJo’s meaningful influence to kids outside of being gay shouldn’t be underestimated, either. In fact, she made Time’s List of 100 Most Influential People of the Year in 2020. None other than Kim Kardashian wrote for Time: “JoJo Siwa is a ray of sunshine in a world that seems scary right now. As a parent, you want your kids to admire positive figures. There’s no one more positive than JoJo. You just can’t help but smile when you see her rainbow ponytail. She’s a great role model for children, and her optimism is more necessary now than ever. It’s no wonder my 7-year-old daughter North and millions of other children around the world adore her. When North met JoJo last year to fulfill her dream of being part of her YouTube channel, North got really shy. But JoJo, like a big sister, made her feel at home as they dressed up, danced and made slime.”

JoJo Goes

What can we expect from the docuseries? “JoJo Siwa’s boundless positivity and message of self-love have made her an inspiration to millions who have watched her grow up on stage, TV, and online,” Aliyah Silverstein, executive producer of B17 Entertainment, said. “This series takes fans along for the ride as soon-to-be 19-year-old JoJo explores all the off-stage passions and quirky paths that haven’t fit into her daily life as a super celebrity. It’s an entirely new side of JoJo that we are excited to share.”

While the trailer hasn’t been released, we know the show will premiere on Facebook Watch in the American summer of 2022. The docuseries will also air to JoJo’s 1.1 million followers on her Facebook profile. JoJo and celebrity friends will follow a bucket-list style format, where they do activities that JoJo has always wanted to experience but hasn’t yet.

“I’m so excited to partner with Facebook Watch for ‘JoJo Goes’!” Siwa said in a statement. “I will be going on some crazy-fun adventures, and I can’t wait for my fans to see what new things I try out with some of my best friends!”
