Killing Eve’s ending may have disappointed fans, but I’m sure we can all agree that the acting chops of Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer never have. That’s why they have been nominated for an Emmy this year!
While Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer probably aren’t sapphic, Eve and Villanelle definitely were, even if Sandra Oh tried to dismiss the romance in an interview a couple of years ago.
When asked if the show could explore the sexuality of its lead women, possibly ending in romance, she said, “you guys are tricky because you want to make it something… but it just isn’t…that’s also why I think sexuality and discovery of the wider reaches of sexuality is the theme of the shoe – why it’s interesting to people. It’s not one thing or another.”
Hang on – so the very sexual cat-and-mouse game between Eve and Villanelle was never supposed to end in the pair being together? It was just supposed to be some fun exploration?
The trend of not saying the word bisexual, opting for the “freedom” of “fluidity” instead, is really hot right now. Sandra seems to have a passion for fashion: “The fluidity, even in the questioning that I know Eve really really carries, is what I think people can truly relate to. We are not saying one thing or another because people are not one thing or another.”
The reality is that straight women cannot crush on women. Straight women cannot enjoy kissing women. That makes them sapphic. If said woman is into men as well, then she’s bisexual.
Was Eve simply questioning? Well, if you spend years chasing a woman around the globe, eventually getting steamy in a caravan together, then the question has been answered. Right?
Apparently that’s wrong. “No one needs to focus on or put quotations around things, with it being sexuality or race,” Sandra said. “You don’t have to put quotations around things because that’s actually not how we live. I think that’s one way that people responded.”
Fans weren’t expecting Eve to wear a badge that said “bisexual.” But we deserve better than watching two women chase each other for seasons-on-end, even kissing and exhibiting strong sexual chemistry, only to tell us “you’re making it into something it isn’t.”
Only to give us one episode of the loved-up pair living like newlyweds, before killing one off in the finale. Thanks.
