Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair recreate “Cruel Intentions” kiss
I was in high school when Cruel Intentions came out in 1999, so I feel like I can safely call it one of my roots. The kiss bad girl Sarah Michelle Gellar shared with shy Selma Blair was one of the first lesbian liplocks I’d ever seen (probably only second to Bound and just before I saw But I’m a Cheerleader). The fact that it was part of such a huge, star-powered film was mindblowing, and then when it was not only up for an MTV Movie Award but then recreated by Mia Kirshner and an old lady in Not Another Teen Movie, it was officially part of the zeitgeist.
So I have been slacking on going to see Cruel Intentions: The Musical, which makes absolutely no sense as Katie Stevens is starring in it and it is about five minutes away from my house. Then came some intense FOMO when I saw that SMG, Selma and Reese Witherspoon (who was, of course, also in the film but didn’t do any of the lesbianing) went to the show last night. Not only that, but THIS!

I’m not above cheering for this moment. Selma and Sarah are straight but that Cruel Intentions moment was sexy as shit (especially for a 15-year-old confused queer girl in Michigan). So basically, thank you, Cruel Intentions, and ye women who were involved. They are part of the reason Faking It exists.
The Unauthorized Musical Parody of Cruel Intentions is playing at Rockwell Table & Stage in Los Angeles now through July.
