Amy Adams flys high as Amelia Earhart

Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian opens in theaters today, and while there’s nothing particularly fresh about the movie’s concept, it does represent another genre conquered for the ingenious Amy Adams, who plays aviatrix Amelia Earhart. I caught an early screening of the Museum sequel last night, and I have to say Adams’ presence alone makes it a better film than its predecessor. She’s played a Disney princess, a nun and a southern belle, but this time she brings it as a sassy adventurer. In Museum 2, Adams pilots the Wright Brothers’ Kitty Hawk (best action sequence of the film), befuddles Ben Stiller with her confidence and charm and even slips into Alfred Eisenstaedt’s iconic V-J Day in Times Square photo.

Smithsonian director Shawn Levy heaps even more praise on her:

I don’t know that there’s a better actress in her generation. I mean, there are other big female actors, but someone who can do Doubt and Julie & Julia, and Night at the Museum 2, all in the same year? Her range is almost unparalleled. It’s a huge part of why we feel that this movie is even better than the first.

Hey, that’s what I said! Smithsonian Magazine asked Adams if she sees herself as Amelia Earhart, and she said, “I think most women do. There’s a sense of fun and a sense of adventure that she represents – a woman succeeding in a man’s world.”

That’s a pretty accurate description of this movie, actually. Adams is the only consistent female presence in the 90-minute film.

It’s not particularly historically accurate, and the special effects aren’t exactly ground-breaking, but Museum 2 is a fun fantasy romp, and Adams performance as Earhart is inspired.
