Carey Mulligan and Keira Knightley are just friends in “Never Let Me Go”

In June, the trailer for Never Let Me Go was released, prompting several media outlets to report on Keira Knightely and Carey Mulligan‘s “lesbian kiss.” But now the full clip of the scene featured in the trailer has been released and it appears it is nothing sexual or “lesbian” whatsoever.

Was the clip from the trailer a marketing ploy? It seems sort of bizarre they’d include such a tiny piece of that clip for anything other than to make it appear the two women are involved in a romantic tryst. Here’s the trailer:

The film is based on the 2005 novel of the same name by Kazuo Ishiguro. It’s about friends Kathy (Mulligan) and Ruth (Knightley) as they attend Hailsham, a boarding school in Britain, at a time when people are born and bred to become organ donors for others. Their only way out of this is to truly fall in love. Unfortunately, both Kathy and Ruth fall for the same guy, Tommy, the one Keira speaks of in the clip above.

While the film doesn’t have any lesbian content, early reviews have been good and both Mulligan and Knightely are said to give fabulous performances. While the plot does seem to be centered around the attention of a man, it is much more about humanity and the meaning of life. Here’s hoping it exists under the Bechdel rule.

Never Let Me Go opens in select theaters Sept. 15.
