Exclusive Premiere: Edison’s battle cry “Civil War”

Out singer/songwriter Sarah Slaton‘s new music project, Edison, is a Denver-based indie-folk-rock trio (with drummer/vocalist/trumpeter/mandolinist Dustin Morris, and Grammy-nominated guitarist Maxwell Hughes, formerly of The Lumineers), readying their debut album this coming fall. But they’ve given us a taste of what we can expect with this exclusive premiere of their single “Civil War.” Sarah explains what inspired the song:

“‘Civil War’ is a battle cry from the war inside yourself. I think every person experiences those moments of indecision in life where opposing sides within you have to choose the next step. Your head owns the logical path full of reasoning providing an analytical approach to a problem. Your heart, on the other hand, is an emotional beast that can overpower your mind with the undeniable strength of feeling.

I was at a crossroads with a relationship when writing the words to ‘Civil War.’ I kept imagining an eerie river inside me with a ship completely lost at sea between my own warring opinions. The ship was our love and we couldn’t fix the hole taking in water. It was time to make a decision: swim for safety on the shore while it sinks or go down with it. My head wanted to run and save myself, but my heart wanted to drown with the ship, fighting until the end. I never make a decision in the song because in reality I wasn’t ready to make one for myself.”
