Pride Parades are Back! So Where’s the Best Pride Destination?

AirBnB, an online marketplace for lodging, homestays and tourism activities, has used Pride Month as an opportunity to announce the top 50 Pride destinations across the world. Pride events have been at a standstill over the last few years, and many of the best places for pride are abroad. Now that the borders reopen, let’s plan our next lesbian-friendly trip!

Us gays sure do love to travel: “Nearly two-thirds (74%) of the LGBTQ+ community have traveled abroad in the last three years, as travel restrictions eased.”

When we’re on vacation, we understandably search for LGBT-based activities. “Pride is officially back to pre-2019 travel levels, and new data reveals that over 60 percent of the LGBTQ+ community seek out LGBTQ+ experiences when away from home.”

There’s no question why corporations capitalize on the rainbow community: we spend up big on Pride weekends. “In 2019, when Pride was last celebrated in-person, Hosts across these top 50 trending destinations collectively earned over $76 million during respective Pride weekends.”

In fact, the weekend of June 24, 2022–the most common Pride weekend–is “one of the most searched [AirBnB] check-in dates globally.”

So where is everyone checking-in? What is the best Pride destination?

London Pride

London, UK, Wins!

London comes in at number one, not only for “[top] total nights booked over respective Pride weekends,” but also for “[top] collective Host earnings in 2019.”

What’s so good about London Pride?

Well Pride in London, which runs “UK’s biggest, most diverse pride,” is “a group of volunteers who are passionate about equality and diversity. [They] are a not-for-profit organisation, and any surplus funds [they] raise are used to support the LGBT+ communities and improve the event.”

Rainbows of London

The first weekend of July is going to be huge for UK Pride: 2022 “[commemorates] 50 Years since the first Pride took place in the United Kingdom.” This year’s Pride will focus on “acknowledging those torch bearers who have come before us and their achievements. As we celebrate and look forward to the next 50 years, we’ll recognise the challenges still faced by our community nationally and globally.”

As for events, London hosts a Judy Garland event, as well as some lesbian representation: TOVE, “a lyrical, romantic and illuminating look at the life of Tove Jansson, artist, writer and creator of the Moomins – the round and hippo-like comic strip characters and pop cultural icons loved by generations of children and adults alike.”

It’s no wonder why London takes the cake when it comes to Pride. There are also LGBT history tours, craft and fair stores, nature celebrations, workshops, comedy nights, plays, poetry/open mic nights, gin tasting, art exhibitions, talks, writer’s panels, psychic readings, bottomless brunches, boat parties, land parties, life drawing, lesbian soirees, church masses, sporting events, and lesbian singles meets. That’s right, lesbian soirees and singles meet-ups!

Notable mentions were:

  • Portland, Oregon, came first for “% of 5-star guest reviews” over Pride.
  • Rotterdam, Netherlands, came first for biggest growth, “year over year.”
