The Power S1 Episode 5 Recap: Scarlet Minnow

In Carpathia Viktor Moskalev is criticised for not stopping the power. From behind the palace’s barred windows, Tatiana watches graffiti being washed away.

Margot is a sensation after her press conference. Everyone wants an interview. She’s the face of this story in America. A photographer asks her to pose like she wants to fry his face, and Margot doesn’t need to act.

Margot’s photo shoot

Tatiana listens to Margot explaining the power on TV. All her female staff have been dismissed so they don’t give her the power. A lone stylist, Solango, remains because she doesn’t have to. Tatiana kisses her little dog and has lunch with Viktor. He ignores General Miron’s concerns about the economy and his upcoming interview.

The first six Carpathian girls who used the power are dead, which horrifies Tatiana. She follows the General out, asking if trouble’s coming. A protestor answers by throwing a firework over Viktor’s gates.

Men drag girls from the back of a van, throwing them in a cell with other women. It’s a trafficking operation. The youngest is taken outside and shot to stop her sharing the power. A pregnant woman comforts her friend, introducing herself as Zoia Donici.

In a flashback young Zoia speaks English with Tatiana so their parents don’t understand. Zoia resents her parents putting everything into Tatiana, but they laugh together. Zoia wants to go to Israel and track down their kind old neighbour. And Tatiana dreams of the Olympics.

Tatiana falls at the gym and her trainer is brutal. She runs off, upset. A crowd of male politicians ogle the girls. Tatiana’s father shakes hands with Viktor, who asks Tatiana to stretch for him again. Viktor introduces himself as Finance Minister and asks Tatiana on a date. Her face falls. Behind Viktor her father gestures until Tatiana agrees. In the present Viktor orders scientists to examine the skein.

Tunde interviews Margot, and they fangirl over each other’s work championing women’s rights. Tunde asks if she has the power and Margot gives a politician’s answer. She slams the governor’s plans to create a register of women with EoD: “we can’t legislate women’s bodies.” Helen cuts the interview short. And Margot laughs off Tunde’s question about whether she’ll run for governor. On the way out Helen warns Margot that she’s receiving threats after UrbanDox targeted her.

Margot’s son Matty watches UrbanDox’s videos, Rob walking in during a rant about feminazis. They argue about UrbanDox going after Margot. Matty’s angry after Jos burned him; confused by a new social order where girls fight back.

Tatiana and her tiny horse

Tatiana walks a tiny horse through Viktor’s mansion. She finds Viktor watching footage of his skein removal ‘research’ program. Women are dying from blood loss when scientists rip out the organ. Tatiana cries silent tears.

Rob’s disgusted by the Carpathian research. His boss wants him on a federal project to trial drugs supressing EOD. But Rob’s conflicted. He sees it could help girls like Jos, but knows the government will use it unethically.

Jos and Ryan

Jos learns finesse with her power, lasering a Margot mask. But when Jos touches Ryan she loses control and burns the mask. Jos doesn’t get why everyone but her can control the power. Rob smells burning and asks Jos if she’s smoking weed. He’s worried she lit an accidental fire, and how Jos is doing. They have a super awkward conversation about sex, Mean Girls style: “I’m not a regular dad. I’m a doctor.”

Margot gets home, complaining about the stress of her job and UrbanDox supporters making creepy masks of her face. Jos is unimpressed, telling Margot nobody made her do the press conference or interviews. Margot mentions duty and Jos leaves, slamming the door behind her. Margot’s worried Jos hates her.

Rob tells Margot about the Carpathian research, but she already knows. Rob’s horrified by her complacency about women dying, calling her a hypocrite. He discloses the government’s plan to add a tasteless, colourless EOD suppressant to the water supply. Rob doesn’t want to go to the governor’s party when Daniel is behind this, but Margot insists.

Rob calls Declan

Alone, Rob calls his buddy Declan. He whistle-blows the suppressant and the skein removals. Declan promises not to name him, and Rob sends the proof.

At the party Margot mingles while Rob drinks. Daniel asks if she has EOD, threatening to ruin Margot’s career if she ruins his election. And the story breaks. Rob’s not named, the source called scarlet minnow. Daniel excuses himself as his guests freak out over women being tortured.

Rob and Margot

Rob’s in the doghouse with Margot. She’s furious he risked her career. And years of resentment pour out. Rob hates that Margot never asks about his day; that she’s career obsessed and neglects their kids. Rob reveals Matty’s into UrbanDox – their son hates everything Margot stands for. All three kids watch from the balcony as their drunk father goes swimming.

In a flashback Bunny puts makeup on a young Tatiana for her date. Only when her mother yells does Tatiana go. At a fancy restaurant where she uses the wrong cutlery, Viktor gives Tatiana a diamond bracelet.

At the gym Tatiana swears getting married won’t interrupt her training. But the instructor ends Tatiana’s Olympic dream, insisting her career is over. Viktor doesn’t want his wife distracted. She leaves in tears. At home Tatiana tries to pack a doll, but Bunny throws it away. She begs Bunny to let her go to the Olympics. And she’s terrified Viktor will expect sex. Bunny slaps Tatiana and says she must sleep with Viktor.

Zoia begs Tatiana to take her, but Tatiana’s too angry that Zoia gets to stay a kid. She leaves, telling Zoia to run away. Present day Zoia tells trafficked girls about the uprising. She’s sure the girl who brings them food can pass it on.

Margot tries to fix things with Jos. She opens up, saying it feels like she’s failing at everything. They smoke a blunt together, which Jos lights with her power. Margot is proud. She and Jos connect. Jos explains how the power has freed her because she no longer fears men. And Margot wants it. At first Jos is scared, but Margot trusts her. And Jos passes it on.

Solango’s sparks

Tatiana finds Solango freaking out about the power, afraid to lose her job. She demands Solango pass it on, threatening to call the guards. Solango does it. And Tatiana gains EOD.

So does Zoia. The trafficked women share the power, fry their captors, and flee. Zoia struggles to run because of her pregnancy. But the women stay with her.
