Do you want to hear just the best news? No, I mean it, The Best? OK, gather around and I’ll whisper it into your collective ears. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are going to co-host the Golden Globes together Jan. 13. Great, well, now you’re just screaming into my ear.” Yes, it’s true, two of television’s funniest and smartest women will team up (again) to make the award show season so much more bearable. This will be the first time either woman has hosted a major award show, separate or together. And it is making my dream come true — and also the dreams of a lot of other fans of talented women everywhere.
Their friendship and accomplishments together are well known. The two met in Chicago in 1993 when they were both doing improv. They began working together in 2001 when Amy joined Saturday Night Live. Then in 2004 the duo teamed up to be the first pair of female anchors on SNL‘s Weekend Update. That same year Tina wrote and starred in Mean Girls, which also featured Amy as the quintessential “cool mom.” Tina left SNL in 2006 to make 30 Rock and Amy followed in 2008 to make Parks & Recreation. They also reteamed in 2008 to star in Baby Mama. And then there was the little thing called the 2008 presidential race where Tina and Amy killed in on SNL with Tina as Sarah Palin and Amy as a series of successful women perplexed by Sarah Palin. We all know how that ended up. They will be the first-ever female hosts of the Globes, though the show only recently started having official hosts. They also rank among a very few women to host a major award show, period. In the 84-year history of the Academy Awards, women have only hosted or co-hosted 20 times — and of those times 15 were with male co-hosts. A female duo has never served as the master of ceremonies.
