This afternoon at the Television Critics Association press tour in Los Angeles, Showtime entertainment president Robert Greenblatt announced that L Word creator Ilene Chaiken is currently developing a spinoff to the series, which will air its sixth and final season in early 2009. Greenblatt said that shooting will begin on the spinoff directly after production wraps on Season 6, and it will star one of the actors from The L Word in a crossover.
Greenblatt also announced that Chaiken has decided that the end of Season 6 will include an open-ended component that will be carried onto the internet. If Showtime moves forward with the spinoff, that online story will segue into the new television series. The spinoff has not yet been titled.
