It’s hard to believe it, but 2014 marks the 10th anniversary of our annual AfterEllen Visibility Awards. For 10 years, we’ve asked our readers to vote on the best in lesbian, bisexual and queer pop culture, and it’s changed from 14 Awards charting the best and worst of the year to 20 different awards honoring our favorites in everything from television to film to sports to the web.
What’s really changed, though, is the number of lesbian/bi characters, storylines, and people has grown significantly in even the last handful of years. Originally we had two television categories: Scripted and Unscripted. Now, like the Emmys, we have Favorite TV Comedy and Favorite TV Drama, completely separate from Favorite Reality TV show. And we have so many options for categories like Best Ally and Favorite Fictional Couple that we find ourselves having to narrow down the nominations. (We’re not complaining, though—it’s a great problem to have.) That being said, if your favorite is missing in their respective category, know that we didn’t forget them—we just had the tough job of paring the nominees down to the most popular and best representations for the year.
So in our tenth year, we’re asking you to weigh in on the best of our year in lesbian/bi pop culture. You have until Monday, December 29 at noon PST to cast your votes. That’s two full weeks to think long and hard about who deserves the wins, although we can guarantee any of the nominees would be worthy. You will be able to vote once a week in each category.
Thank you in advance for helping us to celebrate the incredible strides our community has made in not only this year, but the last decade.
THE POLLS ARE NOW CLOSED. THANK YOU FOR VOTING!
