Callie and Arizona are moving on from one another when “Grey’s Anatomy” returns next week

For fans of Grey’s Anatomy (and Calzona shippers in particular) the latter half of Season 11 is going to be a tough pill to swallow. The fan favorite couple, that survived a hospital shooting, impregnation by best friend, a near fatal car crash, a plane crash, an amputation, a miscarriage, an affair, and Leah Murphy, finally called it quits earlier this season in an emotionally charged episode. Callie made the call, much to Arizona’s surprise and heartache, and the two have been trying to manage the day to day of a painful separation and co-parenting. With Grey’s picking back up next week, Shonda Rhimes has been talking a lot about Callie and Arizona in interviews, and for those holding out for a Calzona reconciliation, things look a little bleak.

In a recent conversation with the Hollywood Reporter, Rhimes had this to say about what’s coming next for Callie and Arizona.

“We reach a place where there is an exploration of them dating and getting back out there into the world. I didn’t want to rush it. I didn’t want to throw them at other people because I feel the same as with Owen (Kevin McKidd) – you have to be respectful of the relationship they had. We do it slowly and interestingly, and then we’re going to take our little steps. But it’s been really fun to put them out there and find people that they’re intrigued by.”

While there has been some speculation about a possible connection between Callie and Owen, who has always wanted children, Rhimes had this to say in TV Line.

“I have thought of that – and I don’t know why that is still not a possibility. I don’t know why you think that’s not a possibility,” she answered. “Yeah, we’ve thought of every possibility for Owen and how he can have a baby – believe me.”

Personally, I think it seems pretty clear that Owen and Amelia are headed for coupledom, but with Grey’s you never know. When, not if, Callie and Arizona start dating other people, it will most likely involve introducing new characters as nearly everyone else is coupled up. The positive side of the break up has been that Arizona and Callie are finally getting meaty storylines that don’t revolve around their relationship drama. Arizona and Dr. Herman’s (Geena Davis) story is getting revved up now that Arizona has recruited Amelia to try and save Dr. Herman’s life. Callie has discovered a passion for working with disabled vets, and continuing to improve the sensors that could be groundbreaking in the treatment of amputees. Plus her friendship with Meredith, is pretty fantastic. All that said, it still does sting to see Calzona living completely separate lives.

Could Callie and Arizona work it out in the end. Rhimes won’t take it off the table, but she is also not making any promises. Again, in the Hollywood Reporter:

“I’m always rooting for Arizona and Callie to be together,” says Rhimes, who notes that she has the couple’s wedding cake topper in her office as a keepsake. “For me, I think they’re the perfect couple, but that’s not to say they’re going to be together. For me, they’re the perfect couple. It would make me very sad if they were apart. That doesn’t mean that they’re going to be able to work out their problems and get it together in time, for when ever the show is going to end. But I hope so. If they can, I think it would be amazing. But until they do, there’s other people to explore.”

Shonda has spoken and the news is…well, vague. So hold on to your hearts this season when Grey’s picks back up next Thursday. What is your wish for Callie and Arizona?
