Why Lesbians Should Watch the 2015 Academy Awards

OK, we’ll admit it: This year’s Academy Awards don’t look too lesbianish. At least last year we had host Ellen DeGeneres taking celebrity selfies in gorgeous tuxes and getting huge laughs when she came on stage in her glittery Glenda ballgown.

Still, we are hopeful that the ceremony will be entertaining enough, and there are still a few solid reasons we think watching the show could be worthwhile.

Out lesbians Paula Pell and Liz Feldman are writers. Former SNL scribe Paula isn’t afraid to be frank with Hollywood. (She has already tweeted how white the nominees are this year.) and Liz is already one our faves. Surely their witty one-liners and smart jokes will slay.

Tegan and Sara are performing. With The Lonely Island, no less!

Women we love will be presenting and performing. Like Anna Kendrick, Jennifer Lopez, Kerry Washington, Naomi Watts, Meryl Streep, Lupita Nyong’o, Nicole Kidman and Zoe Saldana.

Megan Ellison’s Foxcatcher is up for five awards. The out producer could see her film win Best Actor in a Leading Role, Actor in a Supporting Role, Directing Nominees, Makeup and Hairstyling Nominees and Writing – Original Screenplay Nominees. Bonus: She usually wears a dapper suit to red carpet events.

Gay dudes are making a good showing. Out actor Neil Patrick Harris is hosting, the gay themed The Imitation Game is up for several top awards and co-writers/directors (and real life partners) Wash Westmoreland and Richard Glatzer are behind Still Alice, which has Julianne Moore is nominated for Best Actress.

Out producer Christine Vachon will be there. She was EP on Still Alice and joked about her Oscar-wear on Twitter.

Lady Gaga is performing. The newly engaged bisexual pop star will be performing “a tribute to the Oscars.”
