Our Season 12 hopes for Callie, Arizona and the other women of “Grey’s Anatomy”

To say that Season 11 of Grey’s Anatomy was intense would be an understatement. Calzona made the difficult decision to divorce, despite the anguished cries of their lesbian and bisexual fanbase. Meredith learned she had a another secret sister. April lost a baby and then herself, and sort of joined the Army. Oh, and DEREK FUCKING SHEPHERD DIED. And we thought losing Cristina was tragic enough.

This season, will Shonda Rhimes, benevolent television overlord of our hearts, make us cry a million tears into our couch cushions? Probably, but Grey’s star Ellen Pompeo also promises this season will “have a little bit of a lighter tone this year.” Thank Jeebus. Look, it’s even in the key art!

We do also know, straight from Shonda at this year’s TCA, that Callie and Arizona will both be dating other women. Is it possible that one of these new ladies will steal our hearts, or will we continue to pine away for a Calzona reunion? Only time will tell. Here’s hoping that both characters continue to grow an develop as they did last season. Arizona’s (Jessica Capshaw) storyline with Dr. Hermann (the amazing Geena Davis) brought a depth to that character we hadn’t seen before.

Callie (Sara Ramirez) also got to explore what it meant to stand on her own, and found a passion for helping disabled vets. Maybe this season will allow both women to step more into the spotlight.

With Derek gone, this season will hopefully bring a lot of personal growth for Meredith, who we as the viewers have never known outside of her relationship with McDreamy. Ellen Pompeo is a hell of an actress, and this will give her more moments to stretch and shine. Last season, Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) had to deal with the loss of her brother as well as a frustrating on again, off again storyline with Owen. Hopefully this season she will get an arc more worthy of her awesomeness. Newcomer Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary) fit right in and won us over last season, and in Season 12, it would be great to see her get some storylines outside of familiar drama.

Season 12 appears to have more Japril anguish ahead, as the newly married couple can’t seem to connect after the loss of their child. Jo and Alex are about to move out on their own and we’re pulling for those crazy kids. Richard and Catherine got hitched so we can probably expect more make-out sessions, and butting of heads. Bailey (Chandra Wilson) should be the next chief, but nothing ever comes easy for the tenderhearted badass, so expect that to be a major plot point coming up. And what of plucky surgeon Stephanie Edwards (Jerrika Hinton)? Will she continue to follow in Bailey’s footsteps, ruling over the interns with an iron fist? God, we hope so.

We asked Grey’s fans on Twitter to tell us your hopes for Season 12, and it’s no surprise most of it had to do with Callie and Arizona. Some of you are excited and cautiously optimistic, while others are still feeling stung by last year’s heartbreaks.
