1. Which show had the first lesbian kiss on television? L.A. Law featured the first-ever lady on lady liplock on the 1991 episode “He’s a Crowd.” C.J. Lamb and Abby Perkins shared the kiss, the first of many that was written in as a deliberate ratings ploy.

2. What show had a very special episode about a young tomboy’s friendship with her lesbian teacher in 1977? Family‘s episode “We Love You, Miss Jessup” had now out actress Kristy McNichol‘s character Buddy being teased about her friendship with her gay female teacher. Bonus: Meredith Baxter was also on the show.

3. Who played Ellen’s on-screen love interest in the famous “Puppy Episode”? Laura Dern said she had trouble getting acting gigs for a long time after appearing as Susan in Ellen’s coming out episode.

4. Which of these actresses played the character of Leigh Ostin on The L Word? Cobie Smulders played the Season 2 artist that Bette introduced to Helena to sway her attention away from Tina.

5. How many seasons did Snoop appear as one of the first regular black butch lesbian characters on television on The Wire? Felicia “Snoop” Pearson first appeared in Season 3 but was killed off in Season 5.

6. What show did Mischa Barton first play a queer character on? Mischa’s first queer role was as Evan Rachel Wood‘s best friend-turned-love interest on the ABC drama Once & Again.

7. Which of these soap operas has yet to feature a lesbian or bisexual female character? Both Bold and the Beautiful and All My Children have had lesbian storylines. And while Days of Our Lives has had male gay characters, they have yet to go there with gay women.

8. Which show has Portia de Rossi played gay on? It was on Ryan Murphy‘s Nip/Tuck that Portia played out lesbian Olivia Lord, who was in a relationship with Joely Fisher‘s Julia McNamara.

9. What was the name of Callie’s first lady love interest on Grey’s Anatomy? Brooke Smith played Erica Hahn, M.D., who liked Callie but was not interested in dating someone who was still figuring out their sexuality. She promptly quit her job at Seattle Grace and was never seen again.

10. Who was the first out lesbian to make an appearance on late night TV and refer to herself as a dyke on stage? Lea DeLaria appeared on The Arsenio Hall Show in 1993, proclaiming, “”It’s the 1990s … It’s hip to be queer, and I’m a bi-i-i-i-ig dyke!”

11. What male character’s ex did not go gay after their break-up? Although many thought the mysterious Maris Crane a beard for Niles, it was never confirmed. Both George and Ross’s exes, however, were in relationships with women after their respective splits.

12. What was the name of the first out lesbian to appear on reality TV as part of The Real World? Beth Anthony was the first gay woman, appearing on MTV the first season of the show in 1993. It seems she has married a man since.
