“Arrow” recap (4.6): Can’t clip a Canary’s wings

Previously on Arrow, Oliver decided to run for mayor so he could protect the city day and night, Thea hired The Strategist to help him manage his campaign, Sara was resurrected but they forgot to put her soul back so Oliver and Laurel went to get it and did so pretty easily, and Felicity got a message from Ray that said he was alive and in trouble.

As you may recall, six months ago, while Ray was trying to get the miniaturization function on his suit to work, he blew off the top of the Palmer Tech building. Everyone assumed he died, including Felicity, who used Oliver and their suburban escape to get over the loss.

Anyway, today in Star City, Oliver and Thea meet with The Strategist, and they’re almost done with all the campaign-y things. All they need to talk about now is budget, which they were going to discuss with Felicity, who is a no-show. Oliver leaves to find out why, and The Strategist asks Thea out on a date under the guise of checking out a venue. Thea rejects him politely, saying her life is literal chaos she doesn’t want to drag another person into, and he apologizes for crossing professional boundaries, smiles and leaves. Given his mature and polite reaction, I guess he has earned his name, and I shall now call him Alex. Maybe sometimes Alex the Strategist. Especially because Thea didn’t seem to mind being hit on.

At Palmer Tech, Felicity is playing Ray’s message on repeat while tapping furiously on her keyboard in a graveyard of energy drinks and junk food. Basically, she’s losing her damn mind.

Curtis comes in and tries to convince her to sleep, but she’s desperate to help Ray. Oliver comes in (causing Curtis to chant to himself that he’s married and Oliver’s straight) and Curtis squints suspiciously at him, using his hand to cover half of Oliver’s face to try to see if Oliver is the Green Arrow. He shrugs it off, saying the jawline is off, and Oliver fights a smirk as Curtis leaves.

Oliver asks Felicity why she blew off the meeting and Felicity plays the message from Ray. He sent the message six days ago, long after he supposedly died, so she has to help him STAT.

Across town, Sara gets off the phone with her mother, River Song, who she tearfully says she loves very much. Laurel and Lance ask Sara how that was, as if they hadn’t both been staring at her, watching her smile and move and breathe and be alive with wonder and awe, and Sara says it was easier than the last time her mother thought she was dead and found out she wasn’t.

Sara relays a story her mom told her, about how once she got lost on the way home from school and she promised her mother she’d always come back. Sara can’t remember that happening and it makes her sad, but Laurel and Lance are so happy she’s back that they tell her not to worry about it and hug her for what is probably the billionth time.

Back at the Olicity Loft, Felicity is fuming because instead of suiting up to find Ray at all costs, Oliver reacted to the news of Ray being alive by telling her she needs a shower and a nap. And he’s not wrong.

Felicity is close to agreeing to some shut-eye when her phone goes off, alerting her to the fact her backtrace worked and might have found Ray. She opens her laptop and sure enough, Ray’s face appears. He tells Felicity that he doesn’t know where he is, but he’s trapped, and very tiny. He’s currently a paperweight on a mysterious desk.

Felicity takes Oliver to Arrow HQ, where Laurel meets them. Felicity explains that Ray is the size of a tater tot and fears for his safety more than ever. Ray thinks he has all the equipment to fix it back at Palmer Tech so she’s off to find it. She starts to fly out of there and Oliver offers to go with her. She asks him why like that’s the stupidest idea he’s ever had and he’s a little hurt that his girlfriend is dropping everything to hunt for her ex-boyfriend, but smart enough not to say so out loud.

Curtis is excited when he finds out Ray is teensy weensy-that science is incredible! But Felicity tells him to focus. Ray being itsy bitsy means he can get squashed at any moment. Curtis says there’s one part they need that they don’t have on hand, and it’s patented by Palmer Tech’s biggest competitor. Curtis is sure things can’t get worse, and Felicity begs to differ when her mother comes in, squealing all the while.

Mama Smoak explains that Oliver called her and told her Felicity was having a hard time at work, and Felicity shuffles her mom right out and tells Curtis to build the machine while she has the Green Arrow get that one part they need.As the Green Arrow gets into place for the mission, Felicity scolds him for being the kind of guy who can take down the League of Assassins but not say no to his girlfriend’s mother. But he was weakened by emojis! Felicity is almost in full rant mode when Diggle speaks up, and suddenly realizes that everyone’s comm links are open, not just Oliver’s. So everyone is listening. Diggle, Thea, Laurel…AND SARA.

Laurel asks her sister if she’s really up for a mission, and Sara says she needs to get back to normal, and weirdly enough her normal includes running around in leather suits in the dark of the night.

Felicity gives them the attack plan and calls Oliver “Chatty Cathy,” even though she’d have more choice words for him if their conversation was more private. The Canaries are amused.

Oliver flies in and uses a panel to open the door for his team. Thea pulls Laurel aside quickly to ask if she was sure bringing Sara was a good idea, and, unsurprisingly, Laurel is like IT’S. FINE.

Everyone spreads out to look for the piece they need, and Thea finds it first. She picks it up and alarms immediately go off. Guards storm in, guns blazing, and a fightfest breaks out. Sara gets one guard disarms and ends up punching him over and over and over and over. Thea tries to stop her, Oliver tries to stop her, but only Laurel’s voice breaks her from her reverie. They look at the guard’s body, sure he’s dead, and run out.

Felicity is relieved they got out okay, and closes her eyes for the first time in two days, but she’s snapped awake again by Ray’s voice. He’s relieved they have the tech, but Felicity is not relieved when she sees Damien Darhk’s face looming in the background.

Felicity asks what happened on the mission and Diggle says that Sara lost control for a moment so the girls took her home. Oliver thinks it’s good news that Darhk has Ray because they have an in with Lance. Diggle agrees; Ray would be bug juice if Darhk was going to kill him.

Oliver tells Felicity to just spend time with her mother while they wait, since there’s nothing else they can do until Lance comes back with intel and Curtis finishes the machine.

Meanwhile, Darhk looms over tiny Ray, saying his engineers haven’t been able to reverse his tinification yet, but thanks for sending out that help message, because now he knows that someone named Felicity is someone he can hold over Ray’s head should he need to.

After a failed attempt dinner with Mama Smoak, Oliver tries to talk to Felicity about what’s happened. He understands that he messed up inviting Mama over, and he’s sorry, but he doesn’t know why Felicity is shutting him out. Felicity admits that it’s her fault no one was helping Ray months ago, that she lost herself in Oliver and she never thought she’d be that kind of girl. Oliver knows she has things to work through, so offers to give her space while she figures it out.

Oliver goes to Arrow HQ and fails to get Felicity’s computer on, as if he needed another reminder that he’d be lost without her. Diggle comes in and they share a glass of whiskey. Oliver actually shares his feelings for once, saying he doesn’t know why Felicity chose him. Diggle says just because Ray was almost as smart as Felicity doesn’t mean they were good together. In fact, maybe they were TOO MUCH alike to make it work. Diggle says Felicity is one of the smartest badasses on the planet, she’ll be okay no matter what happens, but don’t give up on Olicity just yet.

Captain Lance meets up with Darhk and asks for an exchange of help, but Darhk is offended that Lance would not only summon him but then ask for a favor like he’s the one who calls the shots. But it’s okay, because that’s not really why Lance was here. When Darhk drives away, he pings Team Arrow so they can follow him.

In the Olicity Loft, Mama Smoak brings Felicity hot milk, and confesses that when Felicity was younger, she told her she couldn’t go to Space Camp because she didn’t want to be apart from her daughter, but the truth was she couldn’t afford it. Felicity had no idea.

Anyway, Mama’s point is, Felicity is the CEO of a company before she turned 30, she has a boyfriend who loves her so much. Felicity is worried about losing herself in the relationship, but Mama says they’ll lose each other and they’ll find each other, too. Making Felicity smile for the first time all day.

Felicity gets a text and has to go; they found Ray. Oliver says they need Curtis to come with to finish building the machine in the field, but Felicity is worried about that. Oliver says they need him, and Sara says it sounds like they need her too.

For once, Laurel is the one that’s like, “Um, so, maybe it’s NOT fine,” but Sara says she wants another shot at trying to control her bloodlust. Laurel looks to the Team, and not getting any arguments, tells her little sister to suit up.

Upon arriving in Darhk’s lair, Oliver is knocked out almost immediately, coming to in chains. He dismisses his ghost goons, but he’s in for a treat because the ghost that brought Oliver in was Diggle in disguise. And Thea is standing nearby, ready.

Felicity and Curtis parachute into a building, two adorable nerds not used to this kind of action, while Speedy and the Canaries fight off ghosts.

Darhk goes to lift the Green Arrow’s mask, but is rewarded with a swift kick to the gut. He tries to shoot arrows at Darhk, but his magic is too swift for that. He wraps chains around Oliver’s neck, furious he would even attempt such a thing. But he’s just a distraction so that Felicity and Curtis can find Ray. Which they do! They embiggen Ray, and all is well.

All this time, the girls were holding down the fort, holding back the ghosts and being another distraction. But at one point, Sara runs out of bullets and launches herself at a baddie with preternatural agility and breaks his neck with her bare hands before Laurel can stop her.

Team Arrow busts out of there right quick, Curtis and Ray in tow.

Back at HQ, they learn that Ray is totally fine. His spirit isn’t even weary after being so small for so long. He asks who had him captured, and they explain that it was Damien Darhk and his ghosts and HIVE. Felicity offers to catch him up on what he missed, and he will take her up on the offer, but he’s not ready to take his company back.

Back at the girls’ place, Sara is distraught. She really thought she could fight the bloodlust, but she couldn’t, and what’s worse, she felt better after murdering that dude.

Thea says it will take time but Sara can’t just sit around and fight it like Thea. She needs to handle it differently. Laurel is afraid of what that means, and sure enough, Sara really means someWHERE different. She says she’s going to visit her mom in Central City, then maybe a few more places. What she doesn’t say is that probably she’ll join up with the League of Assassins again because that way she can kill people all she wants and have sweet lady kisses on demand. (No seriously, she didn’t mention Nyssa by name at all, which made me SO MAD.) Laurel will support her sister, as long as she’s happy and alive, but misses her already. We all do.

Sara loves her sister, always and forever.

Felicity comes home to Oliver and they talk it out. They’re both just trying to figure things out, but they know they’ll be just fine. They Spiderman kiss WHICH SEEMS REALLY HARD but whatever. It’s cute and sweet and everything an Olicity shipper could ever hope for.

Captain Lance goes to a bar to drink club soda and mope and he meets a kindred spirit…Mama Smoak! They bond over their daughters having minds of their own and it’s flirty and sweet.

The next day at Oliver’s campaign office, Thea asks Alex the Strategist out, saying she wants a normal life. But she’s a little wound up, and I’m thinking her bloodlust might be building back up again.

In Darhk’s lair, one of his men says they found the power source he was looking for, and says he wants to use it on this box that he has that unfolds into a motherboard. Which can’t mean good things for anyone.
