“Grey’s Anatomy” recap (12.): Fire fight

This episode of Grey’s was the finale before their winter break. Was it enough to satisfy you until February? (It was one of my favorites of the season.)

Two brave chiefs

A huge forest fire rages near Seattle, promising dozens of injured firefighters. This marks Bailey’s first major disaster as chief, and with a little guidance from Richard, she handles the execution of the plan beautifully. She also gets down in the pit to help with the injured. Also raging, is the rumor mill. Rumors about Riggs and Owen (Arizona suggests they once had a torrid affair), rumors about April and Jackson too. So basically, a day at the office. Jackson asks Callie about couples counseling, but rumor has it he’s more in the market for a lawyer. Anytime Jackson tries to talk with April, she basically runs away, trying to avoid hearing he wants to end things, especially after they had sex.

Maggie and DeLuca are going strong, but things might get awkward since he’s on Maggie’s service that day. And when I might, I mean definitely. Not going strong are Penny and Callie, as things have been rather frosty between the two since the whole Meredith service sitch.

Bailey’s patient is the fire chief, who has been very badly burned. He’s more concerned with his men (and women) as Bailey tries to get him to take it easy. She checks him out and removes a bandage that’s covering HIS EXPOSED LUNG. I need to take a half-day for a papercut. This guy is a beast!

Maggie takes a look at the fire chief, Casey, and decides he needs surgery right away. Well, shit, I have a musical theatre degree and I could have told you that. The thing is, Casey wants his crew to be attended to first, and insists on waiting for his wife to arrive before he goes under. Casey knows the score. Since the hospital is quickly filling up, Bailey decides to turn the cafeteria into an additional pit, with all hands on deck.

Callie, Ben and Jackson work on a firefighter but Callie and Jackson are more interested in talking about counseling. Callie warns Jackson not to have sex with April while they are in this situation but too late! Ben is like, hi, we have a patient here. He comes up with the idea to graft the guys hand into his stomach. Doctoring is weird.

Casey, failing by the minute, is worried he didn’t do enough for his crew, but a teary-eyed Bailey tells him otherwise. He did his absolute best, and so many will survive because of that.

In surgery, Callie wants to know all about the Japril sex. She goes on to describe the pleasures and pain of both make-up and break-up sex…in detail: “It’s like do me or die.” Oh, Callie. The way she’s relishing this makes me think that she’s still got an Arizona fantasy knocking around in there.

Casey’s wife Ruth arrives, and it’s the moment she’s been preparing for and dreading for 30 years. She’s calm and loving and assures her husband that his a brave, wonderful man, and she will be OK. He struggles to speak but says he loves her and then closes his eyes and passes. Pardon me, I have a storyline stuck in my eye. *sniffle*

Everyone is crying. DeLuca goes to comfort Maggie with a hand on her shoulder, but she shirks it off. Later she tells him not to touch her at work, and DeLuca can’t take all the push and pull, so he calls it off.

Jackson chases April down and she finally agrees to talk. She thinks Jackson wants to end it, but she won’t let him get a word in edgewise. Jackson points out that April is the one that always makes the decisions. She gives him the floor to say what he wants, but then we cut to DeLuca and Maggie making up. Poor Japril fans have had a hell of a first part of the season. Guess we’ll have to wait until February to find out more.Owen and the mysterious Dr. Riggs

So, thanks to Owen, nobody really likes or wants to deal with Riggs. Well, also, he’s kind of abrasive, but you do you, boo. One of the firefighters brought in was Owen’s mom’s boyfriend. Remember, the much younger cutie-pie? Anyway, he needs thoracic surgery and Riggs steps in to help, much to Meredith’s dismay, especially after he pulled a steel rod out of the guy’s chest without knowing the outcome.

Owen is furious about Riggs coming anywhere near his mom’s boyfriend and tries to get him thrown out of surgery. However, since he refuses to tell anyone, including Amelia, why he hates Riggs so much and why he should not be trusted, his anger falls on deaf ears. When Owen’s mom arrives at the hospital, we start to put together the connection. Riggs calls her “Ma.” Later, once the boyfriend is out of surgery, Riggs goes to check on him but is blocked by Owen. When Riggs says that Owen’s mother is also his family, Owen punches him right in the face.

Also distressed about all this secret hiding is Amelia, who can’t not make it about her, bless her heart. When Meredith decides to ask Owen’s mom about the connection but not tell her sister-in-law, Amelia feels frozen out again. She and Meredith have a devastating fight. Meredith doesn’t consider Amelia a sister, which feels like a punch in the gut to Amelia. She fights back telling Meredith that Derek would be disgusted with her right then. Man, it’s beyond brutal.

These two can’t sort out their grief, and somehow manage to always direct it at each other. Meredith throws Amelia out of her house, and Amelia ends up at the bar, breaking her sobriety and hanging out with Riggs.

Meredith finds Owen, who is probably avoiding having to explain himself to Bailey. She tells him to pull it together, and then brings up a sister we didn’t know he had. So, what do we think? Riggs is his brother in law? A big day for Jolex

From the get go of the day, Alex and Meredith have been in cahoots, which Jo doesn’t like one bit. First of all, Meredith doesn’t really like her, or at least that’s what Jo thinks. Plus, when she goes to talk to Alex while he’s with Meredith that day, Meredith yells at her.

The couple keep it classy by fighting while Jo applies bandages to a burn victim. She doesn’t like how much control Meredith has over their lives, and Alex tries to explain but just ends up making it worse. Not so good with the words, this one.

Jo is hiding out, trying not to cry in the supply room, when Steph comes in. Steph doesn’t speak, which makes Jo go off. They used to be best friends, and now they can’t even talk. Jo is feeling all alone in this world. Steph finds Jo later, and the two finally patch it up.

It will probably come as no surprise to anyone (except Jo) that Alex was planning to propose. He was being all secretive with Meredith because she was holding on to the ring. When Jo gets home, she thinks Alex isn’t in her corner and they should end things. He proposes but she doesn’t give an answer before the end of the episode.

Arizona crashes and burns

Oh, Arizona. She is on the prowl big time. After that lesbian bar sesh with her new wingman Richard, she’s embracing the whole “single and ready to mingle” thing. One of Arizona’s patients is a female firefighter who was injured in the blaze. She’s got a burn on her bum, and Arizona is a little befuddled at her attraction to the first responder. They flirt and both get a little hot under the collar. They also bond over the fact that their jobs depend on bad things happening to people so they can help. Dear god let this be real.

Arizona wants to ask the woman out, so requests assistance from Richard, who is in no mood for Arizona’s wavering confidence. Also, she’s a patient, so it’s not exactly good policy. Policy be damned, because this is Arizona, after all.

She tries to ask the firefighter out, but waffles at the last minute, running to Richard for help. He tells her she’s smart enough to handle this one on her own and it’s time to jump out of the nest. Fly, gurl, fly, right into that firefighter’s bed!

Later as the firefighter, who is smoking hot and funny (and kind of perfect for AZ) is checking out, Arizona works up the nerve to ask her out for coffee…just as her girlfriend shows up. Damn! The two women kiss, but the firefighter does throw a longing look over her shoulder as they leave.

Arizona did crash and burn fabulously, but she put herself out there and she’s better for it. She and Richard have some jalapeno poppers to eat and some ladies to meet down at the gay bar.
