“Work Out New York” recap (1.7): Exes and Poles

This week on Work Out New York, Holly is leaving a spin class when she just so happens to run into an ex-girlfriend on the street. And not just an ex-girlfriend, but one that she had a “special connection with.” But, as Holly tells the cameras, “Sam was married. To a man.” “Was” being the operative there.

Holly and Sam engage in small talk before Holly suggests they hang out sometime.

But Holly says she’s a little iffy about something else: Sam has two kids. Still, Holly wants to know why that scares her and plans on exploring that.

Somewhere else, Joe is just soooo busy he says. He’s training clients and working on a hoodie design. “I prefer to be in the shadows,” he says. “I want to kind of facilitate the brand behind the scenes.” His brand represents all of the things I would never want to buy: Narcissism, cultural appropriation, and general douchebaggery.

Lena is in L.A. shooting her first Radius routine, and it’s like a hip Fly Girl thing that I can fully support and am down to try.

Upon Lena’s return, she stops by Holly’s where Holly says she can “see a bright light” in Lena.

Holly shares that just six of seven years ago, she was living on a mattress with only one client. “It was hard as hell but it really pushed me,” she said, and Lena can relate because she is going through some changes. Namely, she needs to move out of her parents house and into the city, which means she might need to sell her Camaro. “You need to move to the city and plant your roots here,” Holly says. “We have to identify what your next Camaro is.”

Holly and Sam meet up at The Cubby Hole where they start talking about their dating lives, or lack thereof. “I date not anyone, like, seriously,” Sam says. “What about you?” Holly shares that she’s just so busy with work but has some thoughts like, “What’s all of this really worth if I can’t share it with somebody and I can’t experience, like, blissful love with somebody?”

Then the discussion turns to their relationship, and how things didn’t work out. “I didn’t want to be the girl that took you away from your husband,” Holly says, and Sam says it took her two years to realize that it wasn’t that Holly didn’t love her-it was because Holly didn’t want to be the reason Sam left her marriage. “We had a very emotional close relationship,” Holly tells the camera, and all the lesbians know exactly what she means.

And then Sam reveals that every time she goes on with someone, she asks herself the same thing: “If I end up dating this person and then Holly finally decides that she wants to come around, am I gonna decide I want to be with this person or am I gonna decide that I want to be with Holly?” And she decided, she tells Holly, that Holly would always win.

Later in the episode, Courtney comes to Holly for support in calling his mom and apologizing for some drama that has kept them from talking for a year. Holly suggests that he needs to be OK with it no matter what his mom’s response is, and that’s what he does. He fights through his mom’s refusal to apologize for her part, but it turns out OK because Courtney stays strong in his love for his mom and want to move on. “I’ve never been more proud of you,” Holly says and jumps on her friend.

And despite their closeness, Holly later tells Jay that his picking her up is the “most man action I’ve had in 20 years.” Noah can’t believe it’s been 20 years: “Damn, Jay, you’re a lucky dude.”

In the obligatory group event this episode, all of the trainers (except Joe and Layla, which this is so her thing!), are trying out pole dancing. Holly sees what Lena and Courtney are wearing and wonders if she didn’t wear the right outfit.

The instructor says Holly is a natural on the pole, but everyone else thinks she should keep her day job.

Lena, on the other hand, knows how to do the damn thing.

But it’s not all fun and frivolity at the pole dancing studio because Courtney has received a text that alleges Joe is trying to steal one of his clients. Courtney is furious, and some of the other trainers are confused because Joe is smarmy, but is he that dumb?

Meanwhile, Joe is on a date (HOW!?) asking if the restaurant has black napkins because he doesn’t get white lint on his clothes.

Holly is on team Courtney, and says she thinks Joe is an asshole, which is way harsh coming from her. Courtney can’t believe that Lindsay is questioning the text as fake, so things end disastrously.

Next week it’s the season finale! Will Holly and Sam become an insta-family? Will Joe finally create the hoodie he dreams of? We have so many questions and have to wait until next Sunday night.
