“Orphan Black” recap (4.01): “Oh, take me back to the start.”

At the diner, Art tries to get Beth to talk to him, but she says she doesn’t need him yet, not the way he needed her while he was getting divorced. Everything in her eyes screams that she desperately wants to let him in, but she doesn’t want to ROPE him in, so she can’t bring herself to confess.

Back at the station, Beth spots a familiar-looking punk being booked for possession, solicitation, and public urination, but Felix never gets eyes on her to express how similar she looks to his foster sister. Beth’s lieutenant is also suspicious about her tip, but she plays it so cool, because she’s clever and smart, making it clear why Sarah was so believable when she filled her shoes.

Beth’s next stop is a junkyard, where she calls out for M.K. (and also calls her Mika) but when she goes inside her trailer, finds a computer instead. Beth wants to meet in person, and refuses to put on the fox mask M.K. left for her; she thinks M.K. is being a little too paranoid. But M.K. thinks Beth isn’t paranoid ENOUGH. She coaxes M.K. to take off her mask and to tell her about the body she saw.

Wolf pup in sheep’s clothing.

The dead man went by BasePair86 online, and he’s what M.K. calls one of Neolution’s tadpoles. She says they put ideas in tadpoles’ head so they can experiment on them…perhaps more literally than it sounds.

Beth hasn’t told Cosima and Alison about M.K., but she did tell them about the whole clone situation and everything she knows about it. This makes M.K. nervous because Neolution is everywhere. Speaking of which, Beth has to go to Club Neolution aka Home of the Celebration Tail Dance to get more information. She tells Mika that they should really meet in person because they’re not alone anymore. Not one, they are a few.

At Club Neolution, Beth talks to Astrid, who doesn’t have her white eye yet, and starts to ask around about the dead body. Astrid calls Olivier, who is getting new pants fitted to accommodate his tail (and a tail ring…) to warn him that a cop is poking around. (I never really thought about the sheer number of people who have died on this show until they all came back from the dead in one episode.)

Beth watches a woman implanting magnets in people’s fingers and chats with pregnant Neolutionist, who has already had that particular mod. It’s pretty cool, the way she plucks a pen from Beth’s pocket as if by magic, but I can’t help but wonder how technology responds to such an implant. Or like, if refrigerators are really annoying now. I think I’d just throw paperclips at her all day. I don’t know. The girl and her manfriend claim not to know the dead guy, so Beth gives them her card, congratulations them on their bebe to be and leaves.

Alison calls Beth next, having just received a gun shipment and enjoying playing around with them.

I kind of miss Drunk!Alison…

While they’re on the phone, Ramon brings Beth a flower delivery from Alison, which also has a few “little helpers” and a bottle of Gemma’s drug-free pee.

Beth is more than I dared to hope for.

Beth thanks her, and makes Alison promise not to play with the guns until she can teach her how to use them, plus also to pay Cosima’s tuition and airfare, and Alison agrees, on the condition that Beth handle the finances from now on, so Donnie doesn’t get suspicious.
