“Orphan Black” recap (4.01): “Oh, take me back to the start.”

Next up on the back-from-the-dead list is Leekie, who thinks it’s funny that one of his clones dug up one of his Neos. But he doesn’t have time to talk about that, or about the fact that Paul is having a hard time keeping up as Beth’s monitor because Beth herself just walked right into DYAD and pretended to be honored to meet the one and only Dr. Aldous Leekie.

Beth confesses that she’s not really a fan, but a homicide detective, and asks him about his deceased Freaky Leekie. He feigns ignorance, and the over-excited woman at his side introduces herself as Evie Cho. Who I reckon will be important.

After Beth leaves, Evie still can’t contain her excitement. She knows that was a Leda clone and is so pumped to have met one. Leekie tells her to stay in her lane, but you can’t bottle a flame.

I have a feeling she’s not one to be reckoned with.

Next, we follow Beth back to the precinct, where the Lieutenant pulls Beth from the case because her “tip” came from a burner phone, and gives her a cup to pee in for a drug test. She goes into the bathroom and uses Gemma’s pee, which she apparently got just in the nick of time.

Beth gets surveillance equipment from Raj, whose hearteyes are more than happy to provide, and she installs it behind a painting before setting up dinner for her and Paul. After the candles are lit and the table set, Beth does another line, looking glassy but classy.

“Something secondhand and broken still can make a pretty sound.”

When he comes home, Paul tries to make normal boyfriend talk with Beth, even tries to get her to go on vacation to Barbados with them, but Beth can’t even fake it anymore. And Paul senses it, so he can’t even face her. She begs him to look at her, begs him to SEE her, but he doesn’t even tilt his head in her direction. She throws herself at him, wishing she could feel something real, but nothing about this is real, and they both know it. She calls him hollow and pulls away, sending him pacing to the other side of the room.

She holds up a gun to the back of his head, but he doesn’t notice since he still can’t face her. He says that if she wants him to go, he’ll go, that the relationship is in her hands.

It’s amazing how tense this scene was even though we knew she wasn’t going to do it.

She puts the gun away and tells him to end it his damn self.
