Lez Dish It Out! AfterEllen’s Weekly LGBT Round-Up

Photo: Instagram

Well, we’ve officially reached the end of Pride Month. Although it’s a bummer to move on, I hope this edition of LDIO encapsulates all the good feelings of Pride and that you had a fabulous month of celebrating. To send us off into July, Ellen Page covered a Britney Spears song, Lea DeLaria made a video on coming out, and Sen. Tammy Baldwin flawlessly shut down the GOP. Lez get to it!

Ellen Covers Britney’s “Lucky”

Photo: Instagram

Although I don’t know why this happened, I’m 100 percent here for it. On June 27, Ellen did an acoustic cover of Britney’s “Lucky.” Not only was I transported back to 2000 when I bought Spears’ album on cassette (I was a poor 5th grader, you guys!), I was also reminded that Page can actually sing.

Listen to the lesbian’s brooding cover below:

So far, all of the articles on Ellen’s cover has been incredibly positive. What do you guys think?

Halsey & Demi Lovato Feud Over Pop Music’s Exploitation Of The Bi Community

Photo: Instagram

Where do I even start? Please bear with me as I dissect this multi-layered and kind of ridiculous feud.

Alright, so this whole thing started over an interview Halsey gave to Paper magazine. In the convo, the bisexual singer slammed “people [who] write bisexual characters as going through a phase or struggling with something. It’s part of some mental breakdown or rebellion story line, and that just sucks.” The musician then went on to critique pop music’s exploitation of bisexuality, saying, “Bisexuality as a taboo: ‘Don’t tell your mom’, or ‘We shouldn’t do this’, or ‘This feels so wrong but it’s so right.'”

All valid points, right? The problem is, Demi took Halsey’s last comment as dig towards her song “Cool For The Summer.” In the song, Lovato sings:

“Got my mind on your body And your body on my mind Got a taste for the cherry I just need to take a bite Don’t tell your mother Kiss one another Die for each other We’re cool for the summer (Ha)”
Lovato, who has hinted at being bisexual in the past, also tweeted about the situation:

Although I don’t think Halsey was necessarily referring to Lovato, or that the song is even about bisexuality, it’s still important to recognize that pop music regularly exploits bisexuality and same-sex relationships in general. Hi, Katy Perry!

But wait… there’s another layer to this story. If you’ve been on Halsey’s side up until now, I have some info that might sway you in the other direction.

In a recent Rolling Stone interview, Migos rapper Quavo made seemingly homophobic comments. In response to the controversy, Halsey defended Quavo:

I think he’s misunderstood. Just because I choose to be a socially conscious artist, and I’m pretty good at it, that doesn’t mean every artist is going to be equipped to be politically correct. I don’t think he’s inherently homophobic, I think he’s in a tough place of trying to explain what he means. I agree his apology was bullshit but I can’t police everybody.”
Obviously, the New Jersey native’s defense of the comments sparked a lot of outrage within the LGBTQ community. All I can say is, I’m glad Halsey didn’t double down on her support of Quavo and that she apologized. When you’re wrong, you’re wrong, right?

Here are Halsey’s tweets on the situation:

Phew, I’m done. That was a lot of nonsense to sift through.

Ruby Rose Has A Cameo In Pitch Perfect 3’s Trailer

Photo: Universal Pictures

In case you haven’t noticed, Ruby is really trying to get her movie career established. On Thursday, Rose made a cameo in the trailer for Pitch Perfect 3. The lesbian will play the character of Calamity, aka Anna Kendrick’s rival.

Check out the extended trailer below:

I’ve never seen Ruby dance or sing before, so I’m interested to see how this goes. The movie is set to premiere Dec. 25, 2017.

P.S. Rose recently announced she’ll be filming two movies back to back, Three Sisters and the fourth installment of Return of Xander Cage. Congrats!

Sen. Tammy Baldwin Slams GOP Over The Better Care Reconciliation Act (BCRA)

Photo: Sen. Tammy Baldwin

Remember when I wrote about Tammy in LGBT Politicians Fighting The Good Fight? Well, it looks like Sen. Baldwin, an out lesbian, is doing just that.

On June 22, Wisconsin’s senator posted a very moving and pointed message in response to the GOP’s health care bill, aka the Better Care Reconciliation Act. In the post, Tammy revealed that she suffered from a difficult disease when she was 9 years old. Due to the illness, the politician was labeled as having a “pre-exisiting condition.” In the years that followed, Baldwin’s pre-existing condition made it impossible for her family to find her insurance. Subsequently, the senator’s grandparents had to pay for her healthcare out-of-pocket. Considering the BCRA aims to make everything under the sun a pre-existing condition, the post is especially poignant.

Check out the lesbian’s emotional words below:

P.S. If you haven’t called your representatives about the BCRA yet, there’s still time to let your voice be heard.

Hannah Hart Shares Details On Her New Series With The Food Network

Photo: Instagram

Hannah should write a book titled The Little Lesbian That Could. Who would have ever thought that Hart’s “My Drunk Kitchen” series would eventually land her a gig on the Food Network? Color me impressed.

Although the series was confirmed in 2016, the social media star revealed new details about the show on June 22. According to Hannah, the show will be called I Hart Food. Basically, the LGBTQ icon will travel around the country to explore local dishes.

Skip to the 8:40 mark to hear Hart discuss the six-episode show:

The network added:

Hannah’s young, fresh voice and unique sense of humor make her food adventures a perfect fit for our viewers. Her enthusiasm is sure to inspire others to hit the road for their own culinary journeys.”
Hart’s show will premiere Monday, August 14 at 10 p.m. ET.

Lea DeLaria Talks Being “That F*cking Dyke” & Coming Out

Photo: Instagram

It’s hard to deny Lea has an incredible energy. In a video for Pop Sugar, DeLaria used a ton of expletives, dance moves, and hilarity to describe her coming out her process. Although the vid is funny, it also makes a lot of good points. One is that we shouldn’t “drag” people out of the closet. Also, it’s essential that we love ourselves.

Check out the lesbian’s story below:

P.S. that “The Sexual Outlaw” t-shirt is amazing.

Jackie Warner Reaches Plea Deal In DUI/Hit & Run Case

Photo: Instagram

Shawn Holley is one fabulous lawyer.

On Wednesday, Jackie reached a plea deal related to two counts of DUI, one count of assault with a deadly weapon, and one count of hit and run. Although you can read my refresher on the case HERE, the short version is, back in February Warner almost ran over a police officer (while driving pant-less, I might add) and was found to be heavily intoxicated. The lesbian trainer blamed her actions on sleepwalking and stuck to the story over the following months.

Well, it looks like a judge believed Jackie’s defense because she got ALL of the charges dismissed. In the end, Jackie pled no contest to a new charge called “wet reckless,” which is surprisingly not the title of a porn. Essentially, “wet reckless” is a watered down version of a DUI. Warner now faces informal probation for two years and she must attend a 12 hour alcohol ed course. The celesbian will also have to pay a fine.

Fingers crossed Jackie takes this lesson to heart and gets her sleepwalking under control.

Lena Waithe Reveals How She Got Her Start In Hollywood

Photo: Instagram

Yes to everything Lena! In a lengthy feature article for BuzzFeed News, Waithe revealed how she got her first few gigs in Hollywood. If you’re not familiar with the lesbian’s beginnings and future projects, the article is an informative and entertaining read.

On meeting famed casting director Allison Jones: “I was actually in Minneapolis, on the set of Dear White People [where she was producing the film] and my then-manager said, ‘When you get back you should go sit with Allison Jones.’ And I was like, ‘Who’s that?’ And he said, ‘She’s a famous casting director.’ She said, ‘Hey, can I bring you in for some stuff’?’ And she did. She started bringing me in for things.”

On her upcoming Showtime series The Chi: “The Chi has been the only drama I’ve ever written. Everything else is half-hour, that’s my focus, that’s my sweet spot. We’re still making it, so it’s hard to say what it is or what it’s going to be. But it’s supposed to be about Chicago; it’s supposed to be about humanizing black people. It’s multi-protagonist.”

On her goals for the future: “I really want to have a production company that’s in the vein of what Plan B [the production company co-owned by Brad Pitt that produced Moonlight] does. They go grab stories that are often off the beaten path or that don’t get a chance to tell a story on their own terms and help them do it.”

Marlene King Sounds Off On The End Of Pretty Little Liars

Photo: Instagram

Marlene. Oh, Marlene. Although I’m thrilled that a bisexual woman led a widely popular cable TV show for seven years, I’m also … frustrated. Please note that I write that as a person who just finished the series finale of PLL.

Before I get going, a few things:

  1. If you haven’t already, check out AE writer Beth Reynold’s recap of the episode HERE.
  2. SPOILER ALERTS AHEAD. I repeat, SPOILER ALERTS AHEAD.
Now that we have that out of the way, let’s take a gander at what King had to say following the highly-anticipated finale. I, for one, was very interested in the showrunner’s thoughts because I have SO MANY QUESTIONS. Although I’ve made peace with the fact that there a million questions I’ll never have answered, Marlene did clarify a few things, like Alex Drake’s horrendous British accent. This might shock some of you, but Troian Bellisario spent a YEAR working on it.

Here are some interesting tidbits from King’s press tour:

On how Wren was really supposed to die: “He was going to show up at the church and then try to get Alex to change her mind about becoming Spencer, basically. She just couldn’t handle the thought of always thinking of her as Alex, so she basically was like, ‘Step in the fire escape.’ The ladder from the fire escape was going to come down and cut off his left side. It was going to be an awesome death scene. I’ll save it for something else.”

On wanting Wren to be A.D.: “Originally my mind was going to Wren as ‘A.D.,’ but we had to be realistic, and there have been times when we really needed a character who wasn’t a series regular and we couldn’t get them on the show,” King said. “The show is so deeply rooted in mythology, and I’ve always said you have to know the ending before you know the beginning or else it won’t make sense. That dictated that we needed to make ‘A.D.’ someone who was a series regular.”

On why Mike wasn’t at Aria’s wedding: “We literally had a line of dialogue in there that said something about how Mike had just made a toast, but I was like, take that out, that’s too cutesy. Sometimes when you lose characters, you lose them. I think there was a line where they said Mike was away at some school or something like that last season, and we just went with that.”

On the possibility of a PLL spin-off: “You know, it’s always possible. That’s not something that we’re talking about right now, but down the line a possible reboot of the show would be fun. But for right now that was just us wanting to say that even though this chapter in Rosewood ends, the creepy mythology of this town goes on.”

So, what do you think of Marlene creating a PLL spin-off?

Does Kristen Stewart’s Mom Hate Stella Maxwell?

Photo: Instagram

According to an article from Ok! Magazine, Kristen’s mom is NOT a fan of Stella. Per the report, Stewart’s mom Jules allegedly thinks “Stella is snooty and a bad influence on Kristen.” A source went on to allege that the celesbian’s mom believes that K. Stew has “been out every night and acting like an oversexed teenager,” ever since she got with Stella. Apparently, this has Jules “seriously concerned.”

Needless to say, I find this story amusing for many reasons. The allegation that Stewart is an “oversexed teenager” is downright hilarious. Not to mention it’s a bit bizarre for a mother to be closely monitoring the relationships of her 27-year-old daughter, right?

Shortly after the story broke, a source reached out to Gossip Cop to refute the claims. According to the insider, there is “no truth” to the story. As one might assume, Jules apparently gives zero f*cks about her daughter’s love life.

Cara Delevingne Finds It “Annoying” When People Question Her Bisexuality

Photo: Glamour Magazine

In case you didn’t know already, Cara is bisexual. Unfortunately for the model, her friends don’t understand her sexuality and often pester about what being bi actually means, according to Glamour.

The actress went on to say:

A lot of the friends I have who are straight have such an old way of thinking. It’s ‘So you’re just gay, right?’ [They] don’t understand it. [If] I’m like, ‘Oh, I really like this guy’, [they’re like], ‘But you’re gay’. I’m like, ‘No, you’re so annoying!’ Someone is in a relationship with a girl one minute, or a boy is in a relationship with a boy, I don’t want them to be pigeonholed. Imagine if I got married to a man. Would people be like – ‘She lied to us!’ It’s like, no.”

The model added:

“I know 13- and 15-year-old girls who are like, ‘I don’t know if I like a boy or a girl yet. I haven’t decided.’ And it’s like-[imagine] if I was able to comprehend [that at their age]. I am very happy how sexuality has become easier and freer to talk about, especially for kids.”

Well, as long as Cara is cool with who she is, then that hat’s all that matters.

Alright, that’s a wrap! Once again, I hope Pride Month was everything you expected it or wanted it to be.
