The CW renews “90210,” “Vampire Diaries” and “Gossip Girl”

It looks like Jenny Schecter Mia Kirshner may have a recurring role on the CW’s freshman hit Vampire Diaries: The network has locked up the rookie fanger for next season – along with four other staples.

According to The Hollywood Reporter writes that Vampire Diaries, 90210, Gossip Girl, Supernatural and America’s Next Top Model have all been given series renewals for the 2010-11 TV season.

With 90210 going gay very soon with Adrianna (Jessica Lowndes) and Gia (Rumer Willis) “getting closer,” it’s beyond great news for the sophomore “drama.” And yes, I’m excited. I admit that I loved Beverly Hills, 90210 back in the ’90s and initially tuned in to see just how much of a guilty pleasure the remake would be. While the new take on the old ZIP code is by any means great TV, the show has found new footing in Season 2 under Rebecca Rand Kirshner (no relation to Mia). Hopefully the upcoming lesbian story line with Adrianna, who has been written very well this season, connects with the show’s loyal audience and continues into next season.

Vampire Diaries, meanwhile, has been an instant hit this season and is the CW’s most-watch show, averaging 4.6 million viewers on Thursday nights and has made stars out of leads Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley. Dobrev is heading to the big screen next month opposite Amanda Seyfried and Julianne Moore in Chloe.

The CW’s early commitment to the five shows serves as a sign of faith to the cast and crew that network will allow the four scripted series ample time to invest in creative storytelling. It also sends a clear sign that the Melrose Place reboot – despite Katie Cassidy‘s bisexual tendencies – shouldn’t go remodeling their apartments anytime soon. (The show was deemed “a long shot” to return by Entertainment Weekly).

As for Gossip Girl, should the Blake Lively and Leighton Meester drama not have been picked up for its fourth season, it would have created a sea of angry acronym-spewing fans all saying the same thing: WTF. Instead, sighs of relief.

Which of the CW’s returning favorites are you looking forward to more of? Think we’ll see more Mia?
