Zooey Deschanel in talks to star in a terribly titled Fox sitcom

On the one hand you have Zooey Deschanel. The adorable wide-eyed pin-up girl of the hipster clan. On the other you have a comedy pilot crudely titled Chicks and Dicks. That sounds like a bad theme party night at Gamma Kappa Tau. What could the two possibly have in common? Oh, no, they could become one and the same? Why television gods, why?

Zooey is in talks with Fox to headline a new pilot for a sitcom about the sexual politics between women and men. The project’s working title is Chicks and Dicks, though it’s hard to see that getting past the FCC anytime soon. TVLine.com said of the show:

It centers on Jessica, the role Deschanel is eyeing, an optimistic but unlucky-in-love elementary school teacher who, after her most recent break-up, moves out of her apartment with her ex and moves in with a trio of juvenile guys.

OK, the one girl and a lot of guys formula. Like The Big Bang Theory but without the science geniuses. The project comes from relative newcomer and writer-producer Liz Meriwether, whose biggest success to date is the Natalie Portman-Ashton Kutcher booty-call buddies movie No Strings Attached. Our own Lesley Goldberg has read the Chicks and Dicks script and said the three men are pretty standard-issue guy types: the jock, the sensitive guy and the successful businessman. Zooey’s character, meanwhile, is a bit of a loser and frump who can’t relate to men. Oh, good, immersion therapy.

Zooey was last seen in the indie rom-com (500) Days of Summer and will next be seen as Rashida Jones’ girlfriend in My Idiot Brother. The project is in the very initial stages and Zooey is still in talks for the role, so nothing is set in stone, obviously. And despite its horrible, horrible working title, this might not be as bad as it sounds. But, yeah, it’s hard to think of a show title that could turn a group of gay ladies off more than Chicks and Dicks – unless it was a show about working in a lesbian-owned sex toy shop, in which case I would totally watch that show. Can you hear me, Logo?

So, what do you think? Good move? Good idea? I think, however, we can all agree that that is a terrible, terrible name.
