The Good Wife seems to have officially become “The Eli and Alicia Show,” with some Cary thrown in now and then for good measure. I enjoy Alan Cumming‘s Eli, of course, but we barely have time these days for Kalinda. Do the writers just not care about us anymore?
AFTERELLEN BAIT
“I think we need to go, uh, deeper.” – Kalinda Sharma to Eli Gold’s ex-wife Vanessa, with no irony whatsoever. Yes, we’re really stretching for subtext these days. We didn’t even get to see Kalinda’s boots and leather jacket. The only vaguely les/bi connection we can make this episode is the appearance of Monica Raymund, who played Ria Torres on Lie to Me and said (as Torres) she once had a relationship with an older woman.
In TGW, she only had eyes – and lips – for Cary. Silly girl.
FEELINGS, FEELINGS, FEELINGS!
This has to be one of the most awkward episodes of any show I’ve ever seen. Will accidentally runs into Alicia’s son Zach – awkward. Caitlin oohs and ahs over Will being a moot court judge in college while Alicia looks on – awkward. Matan tells Dana that Cary has a thing for ethnic women – awkward. Kalinda tells Eli that his ex-wife cheated on him with Osama bin Laden‘s cousin – oh, so awkward.
FUN WITH GUEST STARS
You know a show has hit its stride when Parker Posey guest stars. You know a show needs a new hair stylist when Parker Posey’s hair looks less than fabulous. Alan Cumming obviously agrees.
Posey’s character Vanessa could have been much more interesting and entertaining that she was; frankly, I was hoping she would be a recurring character. She and Eli have a nice chemistry and play well off of each other, but the revelation about her affair hurt Eli deeply. I doubt she’ll be back. Even though, as Eli said, “She banged a nice bin Laden.”
Pity. Vanessa’s ability to rock a power suit shows definite Bette Porter tendencies.
Someone give Parker Posey a good show of her own, please.
FUTURE BLOCK
Cary has quite a few fans around here, so I will try to be nice, but I expect him to get even more contentious now that he has been promoted to Deputy State’s Attorney. I suspect that Peter is playing him – I mean, the guy has lost most every case he’s had recently, yet he got a big promotion? Regardless, Cary has more power now. And that means trouble for Lockhart Gardner.
We also get a glimpse of new associate Caitlin’s crush on Will. He didn’t seem impressed this week, but Mr. Gardner, like any man, loves to be stroked. His ego, I mean.
Alicia may use the flirtation to get some distance from Will or it may make her realize she actually does love him. Judging from her reaction when Will suggested that he meet her kids officially, something has to give in this relationship pretty soon. At the moment, it’s just, well, awkward.
