Sara Rue to play a pretend lesbian in “Poseurs”

Sara Rue plays a lesbian on Rules of Engagement, but on her new CW show, Poseurs, she’s going to play a straight girl pretending to be a lesbian. The actress has written a half-hour comedy for the network which The Hollywood Reporter says follows Lucy (Rue) “a young woman whose life is upended when her fiancee moves out and her fresh-from-rehab collegiate best friend Alexandra moves in. In order to maintain her swanky New York co-op, which doesn’t technically allow for roommates, Lucy and Alex enter into a mutually beneficial domestic partnership – complete with all of the challenges and few of the perks.”

This could be hilarious or disastrous, but with Rue at the helm, I have confidence that the show will more of the former. In addition to her recurring role as Brenda on Rules of Engagement (which she reprises later this season), Rue is an LGBT advocate and is very careful to play gay characters with positive intention. In fact, her storyline as the surrogate softball player on Rules could have easily gone the way of offensive stereotyping, but it’s actually been one of the best on primetime television.

Rue is also a talented comedic actress who has won over viewers with her roles in Popular and Less Than Perfect. It’ll be interesting to see who will play Alexandra and what kind of chemistry the two will have. It could be like 2 Broke Girls or it could be lacking. Let’s hope Rue can pull Poseurs off and that some actual lesbians make an appearance!

This won’t be the only fake lesbian marriage on television, of course. Currently, Jane Leeves and Wendy Malick‘s characters are faux-lesbian married on Hot in Cleveland and, in the past, Wanda Sykes and Julia Louis-Dreyfus attempted to get hitched on The New Adventures of Old Christine. Are these situations still comical? I’ll tell you one way to ensure they are – hire some lesbian TV writers.
