Dead Ringers, Episode 2 Recap: Hell is Other People

Beverly’s back on the table in stirrups. Getting up close and personal, Beverly extracts her sister’s eggs. Then the twins are at Rebecca Parker’s, hair wet and faces sorry, while she confronts them.

17 hours and 37 minutes earlier, the FDA storm Elliot’s lab. They find a 16 day old embryo in an artificial womb. Tom denies all knowledge. But Elliot throws him under the bus to save her own career. She promises Tom a job in her new lab.

Genevieve and Beverly

Back home, behind a closed door, Beverly and Genevieve get it on. Elliot listens in, humming along to their moans. Later, the twins get ready to visit Rebecca. Greta tells Beverly to relax and Elliot to behave. Then she ruins it by handing them a heap of drugs – there’s no way Elliot’s making it through 24 hours sober.

In the car Elliot mocks Beverly’s romance, planting seeds of doubt in her sister’s mind. During the strategy call to Jeseph, Elliot won’t stop making lesbian sex jokes. She throws Beverly’s presentation materials out the window.

Over canapes and alcohol-free champagne kombucha, the Mantle twins meet the Parker entourage. Lawyers and inventors, Rebecca’s family and exes. They’re all into wacky wellness fads – including trepanning. Elliot is constantly testing boundaries, whereas Beverly tries to be polite.

Greta collects samples

Back home Greta goes full CSI. She takes bloody tampons and tissues from the bin. Greta puts everything in test tubes and plastic bags. She collects hair from razors and plugs. Even scraping Elliot’s pants.

Beverly gets into an awkward conversation with McKenzie, Rebecca’s amoral biohacker niece. McKenzie feels no shame about her dad causing an opioid crisis. She wants to drive scientific change faster than the FDA can regulate it. Elliot’s intrigued. She’s handed a card with the rules of a twisted kidnapping game. Meanwhile Rebecca serves her guests the remains of her racehorse. And Beverly, disgusted, fumbled her pitch.

That evening Beverly bleeds through her slacks. In the privacy of her room, washing the blood away, she admits wanting to go home. But the insanity of Rebecca’s crowd makes them appeal to Elliot.

Rebecca and Susan

Later Rebecca holds court, everyone grilling the Mantles about their birthing centre plans. Beverly and Elliot give very different answers. Beverly wants to fix cultural attitudes towards menopause. Elliot wants to sell women the science to delay it indefinitely, and grow babies in artificial wombs. Rebecca’s fascinated.

In her room Beverly video calls Genevieve, who’s at a party. They’re cut off by an alarm. When she goes outside to investigate, Elliot puts a bag over her head. She stashes Beverly in a bunker. Then Elliot finds two of Rebecca’s associates fighting. She commands one to take off his pants, and they have sex while his translator watches.

Elliot gets busy

Beverly isn’t having nearly as much fun. Frantic, she struggles to untie her hands. Beverly climbs into a vent and crawls to freedom. She follows the sound of voices to a bonfire party, where everyone cheers. The Mantles won. But Beverly’s had enough. She calls Rebecca’s people out on their cruelty, greed, and pretension. When Elliot tries to calm her down, Beverly pushes her into the pool.

Perversely, being sworn at is what wins Rebecca over. She’ll bankroll the birthing centre, making it a flagship and opening more across America. She gives the twins a day to decide.

In the car home, Elliot confronts Beverly about claiming she doesn’t want kids. She’s upset, demanding to know if it’s serious with Genevieve. In response Beverly phones Rebecca to accept her funding.

Greta takes all her creepy samples to a secret apartment, filing them and playing back several stolen messages from Linda – the twins’ mum.

At her grief group Beverly shares that she’s met someone. She talks about Elliot purely in the past tense, explaining she never liked Beverly getting serious about anyone else. She describes feeling relieved that Elliot isn’t around to sabotage her.
