Dead Ringers, Episode 4 Recap: Mummy, Daddy, Look at Me

A young English couple celebrate their pregnancy, happy and hopeful. In the present day, much older Alan and Linda Mantle visit the twins. They’re blown away by the fancy new birthing centre. Elliot’s subdued, slipping away from the tour to her secret lab. She taps the glass wall of a container, saying hello.

Beverly takes her parents home. They’re uncomfortable with the luxury of her life and their first-class upgrade. But they love Genevieve from the moment she arrives. The four of them eat dinner, Genevieve opening up about plans to buy a home with Beverly. Linda congratulates them, but she and Beverly both look apprehensive.

Genevieve and Beverly

Later, cocooned in bed, Beverly and Genevieve whisper about their plans. Beverly hopes the baby is all Genevieve – but Genevieve wants a mixture. Beverly is full of hope. She wants to keep the pregnancy secret

After an evening praying in church, Elliot gets home, curling up to sleep outside Beverly’s door. Beverly steps over her and sets out Elliot’s antidepressants. While her sister’s in the shower, Beverly strokes her belly.  Then the twins curl up in bed. Elliot confesses that she killed Agnes, sure it wasn’t a dream or bad trip.

The twins

In a flashback Linda struggles to cope with two screaming babies. She lies in bed crying while Alan looks after them.

In the morning Genevieve’s shocked to find Elliot watching her in the shower. She leaves the apartment fully dressed, reminding Elliot they’re having a baby together. Elliot goes back to church, listening to a sermon and praying.

Greta

Beverly gets home from work covered in blood after a woman delivered in the atrium. She’s happy it went well and proud of her work. Linda interrupts, insisting Beverly change. Later the twins and their parents watch Genevieve’s TV show. Everyone loves it except Elliot. When Genevieve arrives, Linda asks her all about acting. Elliot’s snarky until Alan tells her off.

That night Elliot hears Beverly and her girlfriend talking. Beverly’s bleeding. She apologises while Genevieve comforts her. Elliot interrupts, asking how far along they are and how they conceived. Though devastated by the pregnancy, Elliot holds it together, diagnosing a late implantation bleed. She gets her equipment and finds the baby’s heartbeat. Beverly and Genevieve thank her, amazed. Elliot congratulates them and breaks down in her own room.

In the past, Linda’s post-natal depression gets worse. In the present Elliot finds Beverly and Genevieve with her parents. She’s sarcastic with her twin, still wounded. Beverly tries and fails to reconnect in the lift.

At the lab Elliot checks on her secret project: a baby growing with Beverly’s egg. She asks the foetus who will want it now.

Beverly returns to grief group, venting about Elliot’s possessive, controlling behaviour. But she feels guilty about having “ruined” their life together by starting a new family. Alone, Beverly smokes in secret.

At church Elliot meets Nick, a politician looking for atonement. He was a bad father and worse husband – until his wife died. Elliot’s insensitive, but this only turns Nick on. They hook up. The next morning Greta lets him out of the apartment, dishevelled.

Genevieve leaves to give the Mantle family time together, but Beverly calls her, feeling suffocated and dreaming of their future home. Elliot lies in bed, restless and unhappy. In the kitchen Linda searches for supplies to bake birthday cakes.

Beverly

At a diner Beverly and Elliot eat lunch together. Elliot claims Beverly doesn’t want her baby, hence the smoking and caffeine. Beverly is savage in return, calling her a murderer. And Elliot offers to abort her baby with a hanger or hoover. She insists the relationship with Genevieve is a sham.

That night Elliot follows her sister and Genevieve into their bathroom, peeing and encouraging Beverly to tell their parents about the baby. She pushes for details about the conception. Genevieve’s brother Sammy donated sperm. Then Genevieve drops the bombshell about Beverly leaving, inviting Elliot to dinner at their new house “sometimes.” Distraught Elliot gets into bed between her parents.

Genevieve rocked her audition. In bed she and Beverly talk and kiss. And in the past Alan strokes Linda’s belly; they laugh and talk to the twins.

Genevieve and Beverly

Everyone sings Happy Birthday when Greta brings out the cakes. Nick dominates the conversation, talking over Alan and Tom to brag about his Time interview. Tom drags his right-wing views. Elliot lets slip her sexual history with Tom and Greta, shocking her parents – and loving the drama. The twins fire Joseph, but nobody notices him storm out.

After clashing with Genevieve, Elliot outs Beverly’s pregnancy and alludes to charming the actress in a switch.  Linda gets emotional, wanting to reconnect with her daughters with a baby on the way. But Beverly is dismissive, only interested in token visits. Genevieve extracts a full confession from Elliot about their kiss in their bar. She leaves, horrified. Alan’s disgusted with both twins.

Genevieve leaves

In the past a young Alan reads a Dear John letter from Linda and races after her in the rain. She can’t cope with the babies. But he promises to help her through the depression.

Linda lectures Beverly and apologises for failing her as a mother. She’s sure her daughter will make a terrible mother too. And a despondent Beverly agrees.

Tom and Elliot in the lab

In the lab Elliot shows Tom 58 day old foetuses. He’s terrified the lab will be shut down. And horrified by her use of his DNA. But Elliot claims she did it out of love for her sister.

Beverly gives herself an ultrasound. The scan reveals she’s carrying twins.
