“Grey’s Anatomy” recap (12.14): Switcheroo
Previously on Grey’s Anatomy, Callie performed a crazy new surgery, which means this week she’s sidelined for the most part. April has a bun in the oven, and Arizona knows but Jackson doesn’t. Meredith made quite an impression on a military doctor, but she may not be ready to jump back into the dating pool yet. I really like to break up episodes into their various storylines, but sometimes a Grey’s episode is one big pot of storyline stew and has to be told in a linear way. This is one of those episodes.
So Richard can’t help but notice that the attendings have chosen their favorite residents, and he wants to shake things up. He puts all the attendings names in a hat and makes the residents pick. That means Penny (who is growing on me) gets stuck with Amelia (who Penny is not growing on), and Jo gets Meredith.
Jo goes to report to Meredith, who treats Jo like she always does: an annoying ghost. Meredith is much more interested in hearing about their patient at the military hospital, and Callie can’t help but toss in some Major Thorpe gossip. It seems the McGrumpy has been trying to call Meredith, but she’s not responding. Jo saddles up next to Meredith, who asks where Penny is and is disappointed to find out Jo is on her service.
Also disappointed in her current assignment is Steph, who is horrified to hear that not only will she have to work with children (and Alex), but children and puppies. Steph, you know I love you but seriously?
Amelia’s patient of the week is a 75-year-old man who was in a car accident and also needs a pacemaker. Naturally, she runs into Owen in the elevator (where I’m pretty sure he just rides up and down all day hoping to run into her). He’s made dinner reservations for them that night for their first official date. Aw, ok that’s cute. Penny finds Amelia to give her the news that she’s on her service, and also that the patient’s wife is waiting downstairs. Amelia is not thrilled about having to work with Penny one bit, so she tells her to find Richard and get it switched.
This week’s episode had some great guest stars, the first being Casey Wilson, who plays Courtney, the expectant mother of four babies. Arizona performed fetal surgery on two of the babies, and now she’s on bedrest for the next two months. Courtney is also an accountant, and she’s helping Bailey look over their taxes. Since Bailey is making way more bank this year, her taxes are completely different. Ben is not pleased that Bailey is looking for outside help because he likes to do their taxes every year. Sorry, Ben, but you and Turbotax will have to cancel that date. At least Courtney’s husband came in with a gift basket to soothe Ben’s pain.
Riggs and Amelia team up to speak with the accident victim’s wife since he is having heart and brain issues. The only problem is they aren’t speaking with Griffin’s wife: she’s his mistress. They find this out when the great Rita Moreno swoops in to find out if her cheating hubby has kicked it yet.
Arizona is concerned about her friend April, so she confronts her once again about telling Jackson. (She
hasn’t.) Arizona is pretty much April’s only confidant at this point. Arizona wants to run some tests on the fetus to make sure all is OK, but April refuses, much to Arizona’s frustration.
Arizona turns to the only other person who knows about April’s situations: Alex. He’s frustrated too when he hears of April’s reluctance to tell Jackson and get any testing done. He also doesn’t want to keep hiding what he knows from Jackson. Arizona agrees that she’ll confront April again.
In the OR, Callie and Maggie talk about Major Thorpe, while Meredith rolls her eyes. Then it’s time for some patented Shonda sex innuendos about ringers being turned on to vibrate too long, etc. Meredith explains that she hasn’t answered his calls because she would have to turn down a date, and she doesn’t want that headache.
Courtney is up to her ass in taxes (I feel you, girl), so she wants Ben to hurry up with the sonogram. Ben’s having a little trouble finding all four babies, however, so he calls for Arizona backup. Arizona finds the little guy, but Baby Charles is trying to get his delivery on which is not good. It means that the others will soon follow. Arizona rushes Courtney into the OR in case they need to act quickly. It’s nearly impossible to stop labor once it starts, so Arizona is going to have to work some magic.
Penny has to return to Amelia with bad news. Well, this is after she gets chewed out for mistaking Griffin’s mistress for his wife. Anyway, Richard refuses to remove Penny from Amelia’s service or let her take the day off. Looks like they are stuck together.
Also stuck together are Griffin and his wife. The only reason she hasn’t filed for divorce in spite of his 11-year affair is she is waiting for him to die and get her full inheritance. It sounds pretty harsh, but it’s Grey’s so we know there’s much more heart behind this than meets the eye. Right around this time, Griffin starts to wake up and doesn’t recognize his mistress. Instead, he calls out for his wife. Welp.
Amelia explains to Griffin’s girlfriend that sometimes brain injuries can bring about memory loss. The woman wants to try and get him to remember their life together, but Amelia suggests that now is not the right time. She tears up when Griffin points at her with confusion, explaining that he wouldn’t possibly leave his wife for someone else. Well, you did, buddy.
Things aren’t going well in Arizona’s OR. Courtney’s contractions are coming faster and faster, so Ben tries to calm her down by discussing their taxes. It works for the time being. Arizona decides to take this opportunity to try and talk with April again. April still refuses to have the tests that Arizona wants to run, and she reminds her friend that she is a doctor after all. Arizona doesn’t want to see April go through the same pain, but this is April’s choice to make, even if it’s ill-advised. They are interrupted by DeLuca, who comes to update Arizona on Courtney’s increasingly perilous situation.
Jo is fuming about being dismissed over and over again by Meredith, but like usual, her fellow residents aren’t exactly interested. Steph is covered in puppy pee, and Penny is dealing with her own attending drama. They give Jo 10 seconds to bitch before they go about their day.
Arizona brings Alex in to assist because baby Charles is coming whether they want him to or not. Bailey also scrubs in to give a hand. Instead of the plan to deliver all the babies, Arizona decides to try something very risky and only deliver Charles.
Riggs and Amelia meet up in the elevator, where Riggs asks Amelia what her beef is with Penny. From his perspective, she’s very capable. Amelia explains that it’s personal, and Riggs mumbles that it’s pretty shitty to hold her back because of that. He certainly gets it.
As Penny watches Griffin and his wife connecting again, she notices he’s starting to fade. She rushes in, and the guy needs help stat. Penny yells for Amelia to be paged, but Riggs steps in and tells her that she’s capable of helping the patient herself. Reluctantly, she does without Amelia’s ok. When Amelia finds out, she’s hella pissed.
In the scrub room, Alex, Bailey and Arizona argue about Courtney and the babies. Arizona has a plan to reinsert the placenta from Charles, and sex the cervix shut so the other babies can’t deliver. Alex is firmly against it, but Bailey gives Arizona her blessing.
Meredith is irritated with Jo for not being able to read her mind, so she once again dismisses her. This time, Jo has had it. She stands up for herself big time. She doesn’t deserve to be dismissed. She also tells Meredith that it’s time to respect her, and to get her own boyfriend because she’s tired of Mer monopolizing Alex.
Baby Charles is on his way out, and Courtney wants her husband to be there, but because of the sterile environment, he can’t be. Arizona remembers what a great rapport Ben has with Courtney, so she calls him over to calm and comfort her.
Amelia delivers some bad news about Griffin to his ladies. His wife waves his girlfriend away and admits to Amelia, Riggs and Penny that after all these years, this has made her realize how much she still loves her husband. Now, she wants him to live. When Amelia sends Penny to get Steph for the surgery, Riggs convinces her to give Penny the chance she deserves.
While Callie, Meredith, and Maggie look over Sgt Carson’s recent scans, Meredith’s phone rings and it’s Thorpe. Callie offers to send him a blow-off text to put the guy out of his misery, but Meredith says she’s got this handled. She brings up her argument with Jo, and the lady docs tell Meredith that she does treat Jo pretty badly. Meredith counters that all attendings treat their residents like that, but Callie points out the difference is, that they actually like their residents.
In the OR with Griffin, Penny goes through what she did when Amelia wasn’t there. She knows it will make Amelia feel better. It actually works. Penny did a perfect job, and the chill starts to thaw between them. Sadly, Griffin passes, but Amelia is surprisingly pleased with Penny’s work.
In better news, Baby Charles was born and is stable, and the other babies are firmly in their mom’s uterus for the time being. Courtney will need constant monitoring, but she’s OK for now. Alex, for all his concerns, is impressed with his friend and mentor’s skills and actually pays her a compliment. Talk turns to April, and the two decide that something needs to be done. But first, a virtual visit from Courtney for Charles.
Bailey pages Ben to let him know that Arizona would like to have Ben on her service for a while. Bailey tells Ben what a fantastic job he did with Courtney, and then lets him know that she hired Courtney to do their taxes. Ben is kind of stung, but it’s obvious the dynamic in their relationship is shifting. This big change is going to be a bit tricky to navigate at times.
Alex drags April out into the ambulance bay to Karevsplain that she needs to get the baby tested and tell her ex about the pregnancy. April is feeling rather piled on between Alex (who isn’t even her friend) and Arizona. April wants to spare Jackson any unnecessary pain, and frankly, this is just between the two of them.
Meredith finds Jo as she’s getting ready to leave and actually apologizes. She’s always leery of women in Alex’s life since he’s been hurt so many times before. But she actually wants Jo and Alex to work out. Her words actually mean a lot to Jo.
Owen finds Amelia, who is not at all ready for their big date. She’s kind of spent after losing Griffin and the realization that Penny would make an excellent neurosurgeon. She’s got to find a way to get past her feelings and teach her. Owen for his part gets it and takes Amelia to a place akin to heaven on Earth. The puppies in PEDS are still there, and Amelia gets in a big puppy pile of happiness. Owen even licks her face for good measure.
Meredith finally decides to answer Thorpe’s phone calls, but in a surprising and stalkery turn of events, Thorpe has shown up at the hospital to ask her out in person. Is this supposed to be romantic? I’d be weirded out. Anyway, we’ll have to wait for her answer until next week.
April decides on her own that it’s time to tell Jackson about the baby. Unfortunately, Arizona has beaten her to the punch, which is kind of a betrayal, no?
What did you think of “Odd Man Out?”
Here are our favorite #GreysGays tweets from last night’s episode. Hopefully we will get more Callie and/or Arizona action in the next few episodes because live tweeting has gotten a little sparse in the past few weeks.
Do you think if we pretend to ship Owen and Amelia Shonda might split em up? #GreysAnatomy #GreysGays

I like how Richard regularly forgets that Residents tend to stay w/ one person until he makes them change services #GreysGays #GreysAnatomy
