Anne Hathaway to Star Alongside Michaela Coel in Sapphic “Pop Melodrama”

Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever) will star in an “epic pop melodrama” Mother Mary from movie studio A24. Mother Mary has all the ingredients to make the lesbians go wild, with Charli XCX and Jack Antonoff collaborating on songs for the film as well as Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel portraying women who love women!
David Lowery (The Green Knight) will direct and write Mother Mary. He also directed Everything Everywhere All at Once, an A24 hit that won at the Oscars, and has Peter Pan & Wendy, a contemporary take on the boy who never grew up, coming to Disney+ on April 28.
Lowery describes Mother Mary as “an “epic pop melodrama following a fictional musician (Hathaway) and her relationship with an iconic fashion designer (Coel),” according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Mother Mary will be filmed in Germany and will be funded by Film- und Medienstiftung NRW and the DFFF.
Hathaway has a few projects in the works, including Eileen, which premiered at Sundance, Mother’s Instinct from Neon and Amazon’s The Idea of You.
Coel is a rising star: the multi-faceted artist is not only an actress but a playwright, screenwriter, director, showrunner, poet and author. She created the award-winning British series I May Destroy You, which resulted in numerous awards including becoming the first Black woman to win an Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Limited or Anthology series. She most recently appeared on Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and will be in the upcoming Mr. and Mrs. Smith series for Amazon.
Lowery, Toby Halbrooks and James M. Johnston will produce Mother Mary alongside Jeanie Igoe of Homebird Productions, Jonas Katzenstein, Maximilian Leo and Jonathan Saubach of Cologne-based augenschein Filmproduktion.
We don’t have a release date for Mother Mary.
