Celebrating the Lesbian and Bisexual Nominees at MTV’s Movie and TV Awards

Aubrey Plaza in White Lotus (Hulu)

MTV’s Movie and TV Awards were very different this year. Drew Barrymore “pivoted away” from her hosting duties and many other attendees refused to attend in solidarity with the Writers Guild of America (WGA).

The WGA put forth writers’ concerns about artificial intelligence and streaming platforms like Netflix to the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). But AMPTP rejected proposed terms surrounding AI, including the guarantee that AI will not write or rewrite literary material, ultimately threatening writers’ livelihoods.

In order to avoid protests in and around the Awards Show, and because many attendees decided to defend their scriptwriter colleagues and friends by planning a no-show, MTV decided to pre-record the ceremony and stream it as a Special instead.

But it’s not all bad news! We have some sapphic acting and media nominees to celebrate!

The Last of Us (Best Show)

HBO’s The Last of Us features multiple gay romances and a diverse cast. HBO’s official synopsis reads: “After a global pandemic destroys civilization, a hardened survivor takes charge of a 14-year-old girl who may be humanity’s last hope. Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian, Wonder Woman 1984) and Bella Ramsey (HBO’s His Dark Materials and Game of Thrones) star as Joel and Ellie.”

Yellowjackets (Best Show)

Showtime’s Yellowjackets is the show on everyone’s lips… and it’s got sapphic rep! “In 1996, a New Jersey high school girls’ soccer team travels to Seattle for a national tournament. While flying over Canada, their plane crashes deep in the wilderness, and the surviving team members are left stranded for nineteen months.”

Stranger Things (Best Show)

I’d be shocked if you haven’t heard about Stranger Things. The nostalgic nod to ‘80s sci-fi has been a raging success.

White Lotus (Best Show)

The White Lotus is gay AF. The dark comedy also features bicon Aubrey Plaza.

Actors:

  • Keke Palmer (Best Performance in a Movie, Best Comedic Performance)
  • Aubrey Plaza (Best Performance in a Show)
  • Selena Gomez and Cara Delevigne (Best Kiss)
  • Drew Barrymore (Best Host)
  • Lady Gaga (Best Song)
  • Demi Lovato (Best Song)
