Dynasty’s Final Season has Arrived, and There’s Finally Bisexual Representation
Your favorite CW drama, Dynasty, is back, and this time — with lesbians! Well, more like a token bisexual woman and some questionable other gay women. We digress, Dynasty’s last season has finally arrived and Kirby finally has not one, but two girlfriends. We love to see it.
WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD
If you are not familiar with the show, Dynasty centers around the Carrington family; one of the wealthiest families in Atlanta who are essentially famous for being famous after inheriting their oil fortune. Over six seasons, the cast has changed and evolved over and over again. However, a few seasons ago we were introduced to Kirby Anders, the daughter of the house manager for the Carringtons.
Kirby pretty much wore “bisexual” on her sleeve since the beginning of her character growth, but fans have been constantly disappointed that Kirby had only dated men. It was almost as if Kirby gave the show a “gay angle” but then was erased from that narrative (bi-erasure, anyone?) Thus, with Dynasty taking its final season in stride, it is finally time for Kirby to embrace her sexuality in a way that hasn’t been seen previously.
At the beginning of the final season, Kirby decides she wants to go back into modeling now that she has recovered from her addictions (from previous seasons.) When she dives back in, she meets an agent whom she really hits it off with. Although, their business relationship is short-lived, as Kirby ends up making her feelings known and the two start dating. You may be thinking that this is the whirlwind romance of the season, but it seems like Kirby’s first WLW relationship was the catalyst for her to start dating Amanda Carrington… who we had no idea was actually gay.

Amanda was a late addition to the show and had mentioned she had fallen in love with her boss back in London, causing her to then shift her focus on moving to Atlanta and finding her real family. (Yes, every character in this show has a wild backstory that makes no sense but it is somehow alluring.) Amanda tells Kirby her ex-boss’s name was Florence, finally indicating that she has dated women. Eventually, it becomes apparent to everyone that Amanda has feelings for Kirby, which she finally confesses right before Kirby has to go on a trip. Kirby kisses Amanda and leaves.
The rest of the season is more about Kirby and Amanda getting together, breaking up, and getting back together. It is a pretty typical narrative that ends up with the two deciding to be together despite their difference. *Yawn* However, what makes their relationship so interesting is the fact that their characters kind of just fell into the show. Kirby and Amanda were both late additions to the cast and were almost written in as afterthoughts. Yet, somehow, they become a focal point of the season as we finally see Kirby branching out and dating women for the first time. You can’t help but wonder if the writers decided to do this after fans were upset at the lack of representation of bisexual women. (Did we mention Kirby used to date Amanda’s brother, Adam? Yeah…)

Dynasty is no stranger to the gay community, as many members of the cast are gay men. However, until recently, there has been next to no representation of lesbians and bi women, which almost makes Kirby seem like the token bisexual and as if they made Amanda gay to commemorate that. Nonetheless, Dynasty is your classic CW drama and definitely worth the binge as every story is a little bit insane and everything has an air of luxury to it.
You can watch all seasons of Dynasty, now streaming on Netflix.
