High School Season 1, Episode 3 Recap

Tegan and Sara in the truck with their dad

Tegan and Sara are riding in the car with their dad when the radio jockey announces that Greenday will be playing a show in Calgary, where Tegan and Sara live. They beg their dad to buy them tickets and he tells the twins to ask their mom.

Tegan and Maya are talking at school about the Greenday show when they’re interrupted by Tyler. Maya gives him a dirty look and he quickly walks away. Tegan asks Maya why Tyler is so scared of her, and Maya says she “popped his cherry” in grade 8.

Fast forward to home, Tegan and Sara are discussing the concert when they hear their mom Simone pull into the driveway. They greet her at the door, asking if they can skip school on Friday to buy tickets for the Greenday concert. Simone gives them permission and the twins go to bed.

The next day, Tegan, Sara, Maya, Evan, and Lily wait in line at Sears to buy concert tickets. Maya and the twins go to lunch together afterward. Tegan and Maya mainly talk to each other,  joking about joining forces to become a crime-fighting duo. Sara says she needs to go home and call Phoebe. Tegan goes with her, leaving Maya alone.

Tegan sits on the floor, lacing her shoes and talking to Maya on the phone. Tegan asks if Lily and Evan ever showed up and Maya says they didn’t, adding that Evan doesn’t hang out with girls for very long. Nervously twirling the phone cord, Tegan asks Maya if she’d ever want to “y’know” with Evan. Maya responds with a “maybe,” saying that high school boys don’t always know what to do. Eliciting a smile from Tegan, Maya adds that she doesn’t think Evan is who she’s into.

The next day after school, Maya invites Tegan to her house to listen to music when Sara and Natalie walk up, high and giggling. Sara says that she and Natalie are going to visit Phoebe at work. Tegan tells Maya she needs to watch after Sara and Maya opts to join them.

Once at the restaurant, Tegan is watching Phoebe and Sara talk when Maya asks why Sara being high freaks her out. Tegan responds that she isn’t freaked out and just doesn’t want her sister to die. Maya asks her if she’s ever tripped, and Tegan says that she’s only smoked pot. Maya suggests that they do it together sometime.

Back at home, Sara makes Tegan listen to a lyric from “Disarm” by Smashing Pumpkins before ranting about the meaning of the line. She says it reminds her of when they were five and she would wake up screaming from nightmares, and their mom would have to calm her down. Tegan says that she was the one that had the nightmares, not Sara.

Tegan calls Maya and they meet up at Blackfoot Diner. After smoking a joint together, they go inside and order food. Maya says she is happy that Tegan is finally done babysitting Sara and asks if Tegan ever gets tired of dropping everything for her. Tegan responds that she isn’t dropping everything—she’s waiting. Maya suggests that Tegan stop waiting and let Sara go.

On the day of the concert, Tegan tells Sara that everyone is getting there at five and to be ready. Sara responds curtly and when Tegan asks if she’s okay, she says that she’s fine.

Maya arrives at the house and talks to Simone before heading up to Tegan’s room. Maya looks around Tegan’s room and then tells her that Evan and Lily aren’t coming. Tegan suggests that it might be time for Maya and Evan to start hanging out, to which Maya responds “yeah… maybe.”

When it comes time to leave, Sara refuses to leave her room and instead skips the concert. Maya and Tegan go to the concert alone.

Simone takes Tegan home from the concert and tells Tegan that she thinks Maya is cool. When Tegan walks through her bedroom door, Sara is waiting on the bed. Sara asks if she can spend the night with Tegan.

Halfway through, the show switches from Tegan’s perspective to Phoebe’s perspective.

Phoebe and Sara kiss against the outside wall of Phoebe’s work until her break is over.

Back at Phoebe’s house, Sara reads romantic poetry/song lyrics to Phoebe. The next morning Sara learns that Phoebe is applying to a French immersion program in Montreal. She is worried that Phoebe will be gone all summer, but Phoebe tells her that there’s no chance she’ll get in.

Sara tells Phoebe that she’s going to the Greenday concert with Tegan and her friends. Phoebe asks Sara if she’s told anyone about the two of them and Sara says she hasn’t. Phoebe says that it’s better to have it be their secret.

At school the following day, Phoebe’s friend accosts her for not calling her back the other day. She teases Phoebe for spending so much time with Sara, saying that she couldn’t spend that much time with anyone.

Phoebe and her friend

While Phoebe is at work, her friend talks to her about boys. Her friend asks Phoebe if she wants a relationship and Phoebe responds, “not actively.”

Tegan, Sara, Natalie, and Maya walk into Phoebe’s work, acting loud and obnoxious. Phoebe asks Sara if she’s high, adding that she doesn’t like when Sara smokes. Phoebe says they’ll see each other that weekend and they hug before Sara leaves.

After the group leaves, Phoebe’s friend says that Phoebe and Sara are weird and obsessed with each other. Phoebe plays it off, saying they’re just best friends, but her friend is skeptical.

Fast forward to Phoebe and Sara hanging out at Phoebe’s house. Phoebe says that the high Sara isn’t the real Sara. Sara responds that it makes her feel happy, like she can be herself. Phoebe tells Sara that they might just be too different now. Sara desperately apologizes and promises to never do it again.

The next morning, Phoebe’s mom opens the bedroom door, sees the girls cuddling, and closes the door. After Sara goes home, Phoebe’s mom asks Phoebe why she and Sara were cuddling, saying that girls aren’t supposed to sleep in each other’s arms. Phoebe says that it must have happened in their sleep. Her mom says that Sara shouldn’t spend the night anymore.

Phoebe calls Sara and tells her that she can’t sleep over anymore. Sara says that they can just stay at her house, but Phoebe says they should just go back to being friends.
