Sapphic Nominees for the GLAAD Media Awards 2023

The GLAAD Media Awards are back for another year! GLAAD, which stands for Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, has been organizing the Media Awards since 1990. The aim is to honor representations of LGBT people and issues in the media.

GLAAD announced the official list of nominees on January 18. There will be two award ceremonies: one at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on March 30, and the other in New York City at the Hilton Midtown on May 13th.

Women are smashing all categories! For the Outstanding Music Artist award, there are many Sapphics, including FLETCHER, Rina Sawayama, Hayley Kiyoko and Demi Lovato

Unsurprisingly, Cate Blanchett’s acting skills landed controversial film TÁR in the nomination list for Outstanding Film (Wide Release), competing with Lightyear (Pixar) and Scream (Paramount Pictures) for the award.

The Sapphic’s beloved Derry Girls (Netflix) is a serious prospect for Outstanding Comedy Series.

The L Word: Generation Q is in the race for Outstanding Drama Series but must win votes against television heavyweights like Grey’s Anatomy and Gossip Girl. The latest Gen Q series was arguably the best so far (and the least cringe), so the show’s in with a chance.

The Outstanding New TV Series award highlights the quality sapphic content being released right now. Sensational A League of Their Own is battling veterans of lesbian culture, Tegan and Sara, and their High School series, for the top spot.

Gay people have made it to mainstream reality TV, too. Dancing with the Stars, So You Think You Can Dance, Top Chef and The Voice battling it out for Outstanding Reality Program (Competition).

JoJo Siwa’s birthday celebration on The View is in the running for Outstanding Variety or Talk Show Episode, competing against a list of mostly men.

Variety reports that Christina Aguilera will receive honors at the ceremony for her allyship. The Latin pop singer and five-time Grammy winner earned prior recognition at the 2003 GLAAD Media Awards after dedicating her song “Beautiful” to gay people. She will be awarded the Advocate for Change award in 2023, for “activism around HIV and LGBT issues.”
