The Power S1 Episode 6 Recap: Sparklefingers

In a bar, men are glued to UrbanDox videos. Matty listens at home with headphones, so Rob doesn’t overhear. A dogwalker listens as he passes Margot’s family home. She charges her phone with her hands. Margot invites Rob to sleep in their room again, but their fight kicks off again. Rob’s sure Declan will keep his identity secret, and sick of Margot always putting her job first.

Margot switches to practical shoes and tells Helen she’ll wear what she wants. Helen turns down her offer of the power, afraid of being fired like Kirsten from the Morning Show. But Margot feels amazing.

Tunde goes to a wedding, leaving a message for Ndudi. She’s still not answering. A car backfires, and Tunde has flashbacks of police brutality. The groom has doubts because the bride has EOD. Tunde talks him down, but panics when champagne pops.

Roxy visits Terry’s grave as Bernie prays. She sobs, apologising to the fresh earth. Darrell finds her, apologising about Christina. Barbara still won’t speak to Roxy. But Darrell opens up, saying he’s leaving Monke and Sons when he goes to university. This life is not for him. But Roxy still wants it.

Jos

Jos and Ryan kiss in the back of a car. Things heat up, Jos stripping off. Her fingers spark as she caresses Ryan. He freaks out, saying no, but Jos doesn’t stop. He throws Jos off and she hits the door, busting her lip open. Jos gets out and walks home in the rain.

Helen tips a deluge of hate mail on Margot’s desk, with dogshit from the man walking outside her home. Daniel arrives – he’s declared a public health emergency, making it legal to test for EOD. Daniel wants a list. And to force Margot out. Helen calms Margot down and gets her to think strategy.

Margot is tested

Daniel watches as Margot’s wired up to the machine. She takes the test, using Lamaze breathing to manage the pain. The voltage ramps up and up. Margot’s in agony. But she passes, telling Daniel she’s running against him. Then Margot races outside, discharging all that electricity in secret.

Declan reassures Rob he’ll protect him. Declan’s going to Carpathia to investigate. Rob’s frustrated by Margot’s ambition, and scared by threats against his family. They’re interrupted when a drunk yells abuse at the bartender. She sparks in warning. Then the drunk produces a taser. Rob and Declan talk him down and the drunk leaves, spouting UrbanDox.

Declan and Rob

At the wedding Tunde reads Declan’s article. Ndudi surprises him at the bar, teasing Tunde about having everything he wants. Tunde says “not everything.” They go outside, holding hands and talking. Tunde asks Ndudi to come with him. But Ndudi is involved in politics – she wants to dismantle corrupt government and replace it with matriarchy. Then they sneak off to have sex, Ndudi sparking Tunde as they get it on. Afterwards she tells Tunde to write a book about his travels.

Tunde and Ndudi

Ryan finds Jos at home and reveals he’s intersex. She gave him the power when he zapped the locker. Jos accepts him but is angry. Ryan hid the power when girls were rounded up and Margot was threatened. He breaks up with Jos and leaves.

In the Monke family home Roxy offers Barbara the power as an olive branch. But Barbara goes wild, screaming and attacking Roxy. She still blames Roxy for Terry’s death. Bernie breaks them up, taking Roxy out to collect money. When a shop-owner – David – shorts Bernie, he asks Roxy to use her power. She refuses to shock David. On the way out Roxy insists it wasn’t her fault Terry died. But Roxy isn’t intimidated. She shouts back.

Roxy and Bernie argue

The Cleary-Lopez family eat a silent dinner until Margot asks Rob and the kids about their days. Matty asks point blank if they’re getting a divorce, and both parents reassure him. Margot reveals she’s running for Senate – and Jos is genuinely happy. Matty’s furious, spouting UrbanDox. He claims men have no voice in their home or wider society. Dinner is over.

Outside, Jos and Margot smoke up again. Jos supports her mom’s dreams. And Margot opens up about Daniel’s test. She’s keeping her EOD secret, even from Rob, during the election. Margot tells Jos there are times when you need to lie, even to the people you love. Beating Daniel is the only way to defend women’s rights. Margot and Jos hold hands, sparking fingertips.

Helen at Margot’s launch

Margot stands on a feminist platform, opposing Daniel’s plan to banish girls from schools and make them learn at home. She wants a new, equal world. Margot’s audience clap and spark their approval. And Jos beams, proud. But Matty’s uncomfortable. So is the dogwalker, hidden in the audience. When Margot announces her campaign, she gets a standing ovation. Until the dogwalker pours petrol on himself and lights a match. He burns himself to death in protest while an UrbanDox voiceover plays.
