We are Living For the Bisexual Representation in The Rookie: Feds

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD
Are you a fan of The Rookie? Well, now ABC has a spinoff show that may just be better than the original (and with a bisexual woman as the lead): The Rookie: Feds.
Niecy Nash has really been taking the world by storm. First, the actress starred in the Jeffrey Dahmer documentary that was all over the news for months, and now her new spinoff show has really become a hit. The coolest part? Jessica Betts, Nash’s IRL wife, was cast to play one of Nash’s character, Simone Clark’s, love interests. Is that not the most adorable thing you have ever heard? While Betts isn’t on the show for too long, her character is pivotal in establishing the fact that Clark is bisexual, and not ashamed of it in the slightest.
One of the best qualities about Detective Clark, FBI, is that she never wavers in her self confidence. Whenever Clark makes a mistake she gets out ahead of it, and she’s always exactly sure of who she is. When Clark starts working for the FBI and leaves her school counselor job behind, she moves swiftly to California to live with her father. She meets Dina Jackson (Betts) through her father’s girlfriend, which honestly is a little weird. However, the two quickly hit it off and it becomes pretty hot and heavy there for awhile. Eventually, Clark ends the relationship due to the nature of her job and their parents relationship, so Betts doesn’t stay on the show for too long. The best part is knowing the couple is married in real life, because their on-set chemistry is down right adorable.

Likewise, it is also great to see Clark’s support system around her. She has solid friendships in the workforce, but her relationship with her father is one of the most heartwarming. He completely accepts and loves her for who she is — to a fault, sometimes. He defends Clark’s sexuality and struggles to understand what it’s like for her to be a Black detective. There are lots of conversations throughout the show about race and sexuality that are written in an educational yet realistic way. Casting Nash at the helm of this show could not have been a better decision – and we love to see it.
The Rookie: Feds is charming, intense, inclusive, diverse, educational, and entertaining. This is one of those shows that seems small potatoes, but is actually making a difference in its genre in a major way. If you’re considering watching it, don’t worry if you have not seen the original! You can watch this show without it, and we definitely recommend giving it a try.
The Rookie: Feds is streaming now on Hulu and airs on ABC.
