Parks & Recreation Alum Comes Out As Queer
Yay for Natalie Morales!
On June 30, the actress came out as queer in an essay for Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls foundation. In the moving yet lighthearted piece, Morales opened up about her first relationship with a girl in high school (which she regretfully kept secret), and how she slowly learned to accept her sexuality after moving to Los Angeles.
On especially emotional part was when Morales described how she felt after her high school GF broke up with her:
“I went home and told my mom I couldn’t go back to school. I cried for days. I never told my mom what was really wrong (or I made up some excuse I’ve since blocked out), and she took me to a therapist because I was absolutely hysterical and inconsolable. I think I’ve blocked out what that therapist told me, too. But I know I thought I was sick. I know I thought something was really wrong with me. I was ashamed and I thought I was dirty. I knew that the church said it was wrong and that God said it was wrong (even though I couldn’t exactly figure out why, if it wasn’t hurting anyone). I was told bisexuals were degenerates who are selfish and just want the best of both worlds. I was told gay men are fine because they’re funny and have good taste, but lesbian women are wastes of space. I was told the idea of two women kissing was disgusting.”
As for where the actress is today, she wrote:
“I don’t like labeling myself, or anyone else, but if it’s easier for you to understand me, what I’m saying is that I’m queer. What queer means to me is just simply that I’m not straight. That’s all. It’s not scary, even though that word used to be really, really scary to me … so while I’ll still insist on privacy, and I still don’t want you to know who I’m dating, you should know that it could be anyone. And that’s okay, because that’s what it’s supposed to be. Because that’s me.”
P.S. Way to hold out on this info until the last day of Pride Month, girl! You’re a true master of suspense.
Ruby Rose Is Honored By PETA
Congrats, Ruby! As AE already covered HERE, on Thursday the lesbian was named as one of Peta’s Sexiest Vegans of 2017.
— PETA (@peta) July 6, 2017
Considering the actress has been a longtime proponent of animal rights, the award was well-earned. Hopefully Ruby will continue to be an outspoken activist for vegans — it’s a good look for her!
That’s it, you guys! Have a great lady lovin’ weekend.
