Warrior Nun is The Latest Of Netflix’s Sapphic Cancellations, and Fans Are Not Happy

Netflix original, Warrior Nun, will not be renewed for another season. While Netflix canceling shows is not totally uncommon, it begs the question — why does almost every original show on the streaming platform that features lesbians get canned?

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD

Shortly after its second season dropped on Netflix, Warrior Nun was officially canceled. Originally, the show aired in 2020 and the second season was released in 2022.

If you are not familiar with the show, don’t fret. Warrior Nun is an action-based fantasy show that centers around the comic book character, Warrior Nun Areala. The show was created by Ben Dunn and made it to Netflix’s top 10 shows for its second season. The vibes are like if CW and Syfy had a high-budget baby. While there is a lot of criticism around the show itself, the bisexual romance seems to carry the plot and leaves much to love about it.

Without giving too much away, what really kicks the second season up a notch is the relationship between Ava and Beatrice. In the first season, Warrior Nun teased us with mild flirtation and general energy between the ladies, but in season two we finally see things begin to blossom. There are some kisses and sexual energy, but also tender moments. Needless to say, definitely stick around all the way until the credits to see some bisexual happiness.

Some other cool things to note: the show itself is about literal nuns and has biblical contexts, yet also highlights that being in a gay relationship is a beautiful thing that Jesus himself would have respected and celebrated. That said, the writers do not even throw a boy in between the girls to make them seem more on the hetero side, and for that we are thankful.

However, because of the cancellation of Warrior Nun, many fans took to Twitter to express their outrage over losing yet another show with sapphic representation.

Understandably outraged, it has become clear that this is a pattern for Netflix. The cancellation of sapphic shows erases lesbian voices and representation in media; yet, Netflix still has a gay section on its streaming service. So, what does the L mean to you, Netflix?

The first two seasons of Warrior Nun are now streaming.
